Golf Completes Play In Last Place At Fireline Towson Invitational

GRASONVILLE, Md. – The St. Bonaventure golf team completed the 14th Annual Fireline Invitational hosted by Towson University in last place Sunday with a three-round team score of 936.

The Bonnies finished 10 shots behind Drexel University in the 22-team field. Northern Colorado and Seton Hall finished the three rounds with matching scores of 871 before embarking on a playoff to decide a winner.

For Bonaventure, senior Kevin Lewis led the way with consistent scores each day. The Henrietta, N.Y. native fired a 75 on the opening 18 Friday, a 76 on Saturday and a final-round 75 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 45th overall with a 226 total.

The par-72, 6,761-yard Prospect Bay course was not as easy for the rest of the Bonnies as junior Brian McKenna shot rounds of 79-77-77 to finish as the lone other Bona golfer inside the top-100 with a combined score of 233.

Sophomore Scott Brady shot an opening-round 84, but regrouped over the tournament's final two days and lowered his score each day with a 79 on Saturday and a 76 on Sunday. The same theme applied for freshman Daniel Dunnigan, who after struggling to a 91 on his first 18, bounced back with an 85 on Saturday before closing the competition with a 77.

Sophomore Chris Mackey finished with rounds of 78-83-81 for a 242 total, representing the fourth-best score on the Bona roster.

Brady and Dunnigan represented the overall Bona performance for the weekend as the Bonnies improved their team score every round. After struggling to a 316 total in the first round, SBU performed slightly better with a 315 total in the second round and closed with a 305 on Sunday.

The invitational was the first in more a month for the Bonnies, who will continue a stretch of three tournaments in three weekends April 7-8 at the 36th Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State.
