James Madison Scores Early and Often, Defeats Men's Soccer

HARRISONBURG, VA. - The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team (0-3) saw their early season struggles continue tonight when the James Madison Dukes (1-2) tallied six goals on 22 shots while yielding just one goal to the Bonnies.

The Dukes put early pressure on the Bonnies keeping the ball in the SBU half of the field for the majority of the first five minutes. JMU would strike first in the 5th minute when, preseason Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Year, Paul Wyatt took a volley out of the air, turned on the bounce and fired the ball out of mid-air and into the back of net for his first goal of the 2012 campaign. This was also the first goal of the season for the Dukes.

The Bona defense strengthened after the first goal but the offense struggled to get shots off against the stingy JMU defense.

The Dukes offense continued to apply pressure in the later stages of the first half. The second goal of the night came when JMU freshman Tom Fouhy beat two defenders and slid a shot past junior goalkeeper Bobby Diaz in the 33rd minute. SBU took that 2-0 deficit into the break also trailing 9-7 in shots.

The JMU offense picked up right where it left off in the first half when Paul Wyatt walked in on goal and deposited his second goal of the night with just over one minute passing in the second frame. The Bonnies still could not muster any sort of consistent offense as the Dukes were constantly putting pressure on their defense.

In the 50th minute, JMU forward Josh Grant saw a header try graze off the hands of Diaz and capitalized by tapping in his first goal of the season to give the Dukes a 4-0 lead. Then after a SBU foul to the right of the box just five minutes later, the Dukes would make it 5-0 when Bjarki Adalsteinsson slammed home his first goal of the season with a header off set piece from Christian McLaughlin.

Josh Grant would register his second goal of the night when Fouhy carried the ball along the end line before centering it in the penalty area for Grant who managed to drive it past the diving Diaz, bringing the score to a lopsided 6-0 with just over 20 minutes to play in the match.

The benches took over from there as SBU senior Adam Scott picked off a bad pass and made the Dukes pay with his first goal of the season and final score of the night in the 73rd minute. With that score, the Rutherglen, Scotland native picks up the first goal and first points of his career.

The Bonnies will be back in action on Sunday (Sept. 2) against Virginia Tech (2-1) in the concluding match of the Fairfield Inn by Marriott Invitational Tournament. Virginia Tech defeated Temple 1-0 earlier Friday evening.

GAME NOTES: There were four yellow-cards handed out in the game, SBU received three. Kaine Moar led the Bonnies with three shots on goal. The Bonnies give up six goals for the first time since Sept. 28, 2003. SBU suffered a 6-0 loss at Dartmouth on that day. St. Bonaventure enters September winless for the second straight season.
