ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's basketball team (9-10, 2-2 A-10) used stellar defense to put away Rhode Island (5-14, 0-4) and claim their second straight win in conference play.
The Bonnies came out of the gate struggling both offensively and defensively. By the first media timeout, the Brown and White were trailing 9-6 and shooting just 25 percent from the floor. Rhode Island on the other hand was shooting 67 percent. The Bonnies are 0-9 this season when they allow an opponent to shoot 40 percent or better for the game.
St. Bonaventure would continue to trail until they tied the score at 13 with 7:19 to go in the half. The Bonnies held Rhode Island without a field goal and scoreless over the final 8:19 of the first half to take a 19-13 advantage into the locker room. The 13 Rhody points is the lowest amount the Bonnies have given up in the first half this season.
Alaina Walker led all scorers at the break with six points. Doris Ortega, who came off the bench tonight, had four points and five rebounds. The Bonnies at the time were 6-2 overall when leading at the half, 5-1 at home.
St. Bonaventure would also hope to avoid being shut out from three-point range for the second time this season. Earlier this season the Bonnies went 0-6 from deep in a 52-49 loss to Fairfield. Prior to being shutout against Fairfield the Brown and White had not been shut out from long range since Feb. 14, 2004.
Emily Michael, making her 11th consecutive start, ended the suspense early in the second half with her only three ball of the day. The Bonnies would however end up shooting a pedestrian 1-11 from deep.
It was the ability of the Bonnies to score in the paint and play defense that set them apart in this game. Leading 26-15 following the Michael three, Rhode Island commenced on a 9-4 run to close the gap to 30-24. Behind Walker and Ortega, the Bonnies pushed the lead back to 13, 37-24. The score would stay there for three minutes and nineteen seconds before Katie Healy finally broke the ice with a jumper. Two of her A-10 career high 14 points to go with seven rebounds.
St. Bonaventure only allowed the Rams to score four more points the rest of the way as it ran away with a 48-28 victory.
Alaina Walker put together an impressive offensive performance for the second consecutive game, scoring 16 points to lead all scorers with ease. She also pulled down nine rebounds to lead all rebounders as well.
The Bonnies hit the road this weekend to face off with Saint Joseph's in Hagen Arena in Philadelphia on Saturday (Jan. 26) with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The 28 points allowed by the Bonnies are a record for the fewest allowed to any opponent in program history. No Rhode Island player scored more than six points. Doris Ortega scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds in her first action off the bench this season. St. Bonaventure outscored Rhody 22-6 in the paint and 11-3 off the bench.
