WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Washington (7-7, 1-0 Atlantic 10) nearly equaled a season high in points as it handed St. Bonaventure (7-7, 0-1 A-10) its fourth straight loss with a 78-59 victory over the Bonnies at the Charles E. Smith Center in the conference opener for both teams Wednesday night.
Chris Johnson scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Bonnies, senior Demitrius Conger added 11 and classmate Eric Mosley came off the bench to tally 10.
Defense was once again the primary issue for the Brown and White as they allowed their fourth straight opponent to shoot 50 percent or better from the floor as the Colonials connected at a 57-percent clip, including 65 percent in the first half.
George Washington, which came in averaging
just 64 points per game, put 26 on the board not even eight minutes against the Bona defense. The Bonnies were able to cut the deficit to eight, 36-28 following a pair of Mosley free throws, but GW was able to maintain a consistent double-figure edge throughout much of the opening stanza as it took a 46-32 lead into the halftime break.
GW put the game out of reach as it opened the second half on a 9-0 run to stretch to its largest lead of the game, 55-32, at the 16:16 mark. From there, the Bonnies could get no closer than 18 points the rest of the way as they dropped their fourth in a row for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
Bonaventure struggled from long range as it shot just 17 percent (3-18) from the 3-point line. Meanwhile, GW shot 50 percent (6-12) – not an overwhelming total – but the Colonials came into the game averaging just 2.8 3-pointers per game.
For Conger, he moves closer to the 1,000 career point total as the Brooklyn native now has 983 points. He also issued one assist on the night, good to move him two assists shy of 200 for his career. Making his homecoming, Washington, D.C. native Marquise Simmons pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to go along with his six points.
Lasan Kromah scored 14 points to lead a quartet of GW double-figure scorers. Isaiah Armwood recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, and Kethan Savage and Patricio Garino each netted 12 for the Colonials, who finished two points shy of tying their season high in points with 80.
St. Bonaventure returns to action when it hosts No. 24 VCU in the Reilly Center Saturday afternoon at 4. The game will be shown live on Time Warner Sports in the Buffalo and Rochester markets.
