RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond recorded a 2-1 win over St. Bonaventure in women's soccer action on Saturday night at Robins Stadium.
The teams played through the first 40 minutes of the night without a score before Samantha Cicconi broke the deadlock. Darian Pojmajerski crossed a pass from the right of Bonnies sophomore keeper Christina Sarokon that Cicconi headed into the goal.
The score remained 1-0 through the halftime break until the 64th minute. Richmond's Shannon Colligan fired a shot which Sarokon stopped, but the ball bounced out to Jensen Smith and she put in the rebound to make it a 2-0 game.
Just four minutes later, the Bonnies cut the lead in half. Off a corner kick, sophomore Abby Maiello put a shot on goal that was stopped by Richmond keeper Emily Kelly, but senior Alyssa Lapp was there to collect the rebound and score her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Bonnies did put two more shots on goal but Kelly denied them both times as the Spiders hung on for the victory.
St. Bonaventure fell to 0-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and 3-8-1 overall. Richmond improved to 1-2 in conference play and 4-7-2 overall.
Richmond out-shot the Bonnies 21-10. Sarokon finished with five saves while Kelly was credited with four.
St. Bonaventure returns home to begin a four-game homestand next Friday, Oct. 18, against George Washington. Game time is 3:30.
