ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team handed the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams its first loss in A-10 Conference play on Sunday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field by the score of 2-0. The victory moves the Bonnies to 5-8-1 overall, 2-3 in the A-10; while the loss puts VCU at 8-5-2 overall, 3-1-1 in A-10.
SBU put a great deal of pressure on the Rams early and it paid off in the 24th minute when junior Molly Curry put a cross-feed into the back of the net courtesy of fellow junior Brittany Charles. The goal was Curry's 6th of the season and it was Charles' team-leading 6th assist. The Bonnies finished the first half with a 7-3 advantage in shots. Â
Both sides would exchange opportunities in the second half, but it would be the Bonnies' Brittany Charles who would record her first goal of the season in the 76th minute of the match. Charles placed a ball into the upper left corner of the net from 20 yards out, with the assist credited to Caitlin MacConnell for her first helper of the season. The timely goal for the Brown and White proved to be added insurance as St. Bonaventure would cruise to the 2-0 victory.
The Bonnies outshot the Rams 12-8, as SBU senior goalkeeper Megan Junker recorded seven saves in the win. Sunday's win capped off a weekend sweep for the Brown and White, as the team also shutout George Washington on Friday. Â
The Bonnies continue conference play at home next weekend as they host La Salle on Friday (Oct. 25) at 1:00 p.m. and Saint Joseph's on Senior Day, Sunday (Oct. 27), also at 1:00 p.m.
