How It Happened

Top-ranked Connecticut gave the now 6-2 Bonnies everything they could handle on Sunday night at the XL Center. The undefeated Huskies came out firing on all cylinders like they routinely do and mounted an insurmountable lead early that proved to be too challenging to overcome. A Katie Healy jump shot opened up the scoring just 37 seconds into this evening's affair, as it was the only time the Bonnies would lead in the game. Following Healy's jumper, UConn ripped off a string of 31 straight points in a span of just over nine minutes. St. Bonaventure would use a pair of timeouts to try to slow things down, but the Huskies went on to shoot 60.5% in the first half as the Brown and White were repeatedly forced into difficult shooting situations, finishing the first half 10-30 (33.3%).  A jump shot by Kelcie Rombach brought the Bonnies early scoring drought to an end with a little over nine minutes left in the first half. In the final nine minutes of the half, St. Bonaventure added 20 points, powered by Richmond's seven points and Healy's six points and seven boards. The Huskies would take a 33 point lead into the break.

The key staples in the UConn attack caused problems all over the court for the Bonnies. Breanna Stewart, UConn's leading scorer on the season, was tied with teammate Kiah Stokes with 11 points after the first half. Stokes finished the game with a career-high 19 points along with eight rebounds. The Huskies 6-5 senior center, Stefanie Dolson registered a double-double (16 points, 15 rebounds) and caused many mismatches throughout the course of the game. The Bonnies would pick up 17 points in the second half as Richmond finished with a team-high nine points while Katie Healy registered a team-high 11 assists for the Bonnies.
