ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Senior Oscar Yanez posted a singles victory and also partnered with classmate Luis Guevara for a doubles triumph during the St. Bonaventure men's tennis team's 5-2 loss to Bucknell on Sunday at the SBU Fitness Center.
The Bonnies, who started the weekend with a 7-0 setback at Virginia Tech on Friday, drop to 2-3 on the spring season. The Bison improve to 3-2.
Yanez (pictured) topped Kelly Morque, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at second singles for his fifth individual win of the season. Yanez and Guevara then upped their season record to 9-5 with an 8-5 victory over Nick Bybel and Josh Katten at first doubles.
Junior Javier Ortiz picked up St. Bonaventure's final win of the day, besting Katten, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 at third singles. For Ortiz, it was his seventh singles victory on the year, tying Guevara for team-high honors.
In other singles matches for the Bonnies, Guevara, Elliot Fanshel, Trevor Haskell and Celso de Vera Rehberger were each defeated in straight sets. In doubles competition, SBU's second team of Fanshel and Ortiz was edge, 8-6, by Morque and Evan Zimmer, while the third tandem of Haskell and de Vera Rehberger fell, 8-3, to Octavio Canibe and Aidan Lynch.
The Bonnies stay home for an Atlantic 10 matchup against Duquesne at 1 p.m. Friday at the SBU Fitness Center.
