ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Led by the sharp perimeter shooting of Eric Mosley and Jordan Gathers, St. Bonaventure (10-10, 3-4 Atlantic 10) topped longtime conference rival Duquesne, 68-60, in men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center.
Mosley and Gathers combined for seven of the Bonnies' season-high 12 3-pointers as SBU connected on 12-of-22 from beyond the arc – good for 54.5 percent. Mosley was 4-for-7 on 3-pointers and scored 14 points, while Gathers was 3-for-3 from deep and netted a career-best 13 points. It marks the fourth time this year Mosley has connected on four or more 3's in a contest.
Starting in place of the injured Matthew Wright, Gathers scored 10 points in the first half (his season high) and canned each of his five field goal attempts for the game. Gathers' 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer staked the Bonnies to a 39-28 lead.
Demitrius Conger joined Mosley and Gathers in double figures with 11 points. Marquise Simmons grabbed a team-high six rebounds to lead the Bonnies on the glass. SBU outrebounded the Dukes, 35-24.
Duquesne (7-14, 0-7 A-10) also shot well from the perimeter, canning 11-of-24 3-pointers to stay close in the second half. Kadeem Pantophlet, Jeremiah Jones and Sean Johnson each posted 11 points to lead the Dukes, who have lost nine straight games.
The Bonnies led for all but 27 seconds early in the game and by as many as 13 points in the second half. The Dukes trimmed the deficit to four points three times in the final seven minutes, and closed to 64-60 with 1:06 remaining after a Jones lay-up. But SBU forced three missed jump shots in the final half minute, and Conger and Charlon Kloof each hit two free throws to seal the win – the Bonnies first at home in the last five tries, dating back to Dec. 19.
The 12 3-pointers for the Bonnies come after they shot just 2-16 from beyond the arc in their last game, and are the most in any contest since they knocked down 12 against Rhode Island on Jan. 26, 2008. On the day, the two teams combined for 23 made 3's, tied for the most in an SBU game this campaign.
The Brown and White opened up a 22-13 lead midway through the first half, but the Dukes responded with a 7-0 run to trim that lead to two, 22-20. The two rivals – who were meeting for the 109th time – then traded buckets until under two minutes left in the half when Bonaventure started an 8-0 run to close the stanza, capped by Gathers' 3.
Bonaventure committed 15 turnovers compared with 11 for the Dukes, but was able to earn its first victory of the year when having more turnovers than its opponent (1-6). The Bonnies also knocked down all eight of their free-throw attempts in the second half to help wrap up the victory – their fifth in a row over Duquesne in the RC.
Kloof came off the bench for the fourth straight game, but filled up the stat sheet with five points, four rebounds and four assists against no turnovers in 27 minutes of action. Chris Johnson and Youssou Ndoye added nine points and eight points, respectively, for Bonaventure, which shot 44 percent for the game (22-50).
St. Bonaventure now begins a weeklong roadtrip, starting at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse against league newcomer and No. 9/10 Butler on Wednesday night at 7. The game will be televised and picked up by Time Warner Sports back to the Buffalo and Rochester markets.
