PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Playing its first game of the 2013 season, the St. Bonaventure baseball team (0-1) allowed South Dakota State (3-1) to score six runs in the 1st inning and never fully recovered en route to a 10-5 loss against the Jackrabbits on Saturday afternoon.
A trio of Bonavenure players posted multi-hit games, led by senior Billy Urban's 2-3 effort (picuted). One of Urban's hits was later changed to a error, making him 1-3 on the day. Senior Eric Jutca went 2-5, a performance matched by classmate Jason Radwan. Urban, Jutca, Joel Rosencrance and Michael Meredith each recorded an RBI, while Radwan scored two runs.
The Jackrabbits raced out to that 6-0 start against Bona starter Andrew Revello. The redshirt junior – making his first start since a season-ending injury suffered last year while in Florida – surrendered five of his seven hits and six of his nine runs in the first frame. Right-handed Revello (0-1) took the loss as he tossed four innings, faced 27 batters, allowed seven earned runs, hit three batters, struck out two and walked two more.
After SDSU added two more runs in the 2nd and one more in the 3rd to take a 9-0 lead, the Bonnies finally got on the board in the 4th inning thanks to a pair of Jackrabbits' miscues. Radwan, who led off the inning by reaching on an error by the second baseman, scored on an error by the first baseman during Rosenscrance's plate appearance. Meredith then grounded out to third to plate Urban, who had reached on a single and made his way over to third base on the pair of errors.
The Brown and White added a couple more runs in the 6th inning. Radwan started the scoring again, this time on an Urban sacrifice fly to center after leading off the inning with a double and advancing to third on a double by Austin Ingraham – Radwan needed to hold up at second as it appeared the outfielder could make the catch. Ingraham later scored on a single by Rosencrance.
The Jackrabbits plated their final run in the 7th, and the Bonnies tacked on their closing tally in the 9th as redshirt sophomore Bret Heath recorded his first collegiate hit with a two-out double before scoring on Jutca's single.
Following Revello's departure, four Bona pitchers tossed an inning each, including three scoreless frames by SBU freshmen Drew Teller (5th inning), Connor Grey (6th inning) and Ryan Winton (8th inning). Teller struck out two in his inning of work, Grey struck out one and surrendered a hit in his work and Winton worked around two hits and struck out one. The 10th South Dakota State run came off junior transfer Bo Watson, who also struck out a batter in his inning of work.
SDSU, which opened its season on Monday with a doubleheader sweep of NAIA Waldorf, dropped its first game of the season on Friday against Ohio State, and the Jackrabbits were set to face the Buckeyes again on Saturday afternoon.
St. Bonaventure returns to action on Sunday as it meets the Jackrabbits again, looking to split the weekend meetings. First pitch is set for Noon, with redshirt senior Eddie Gray scheduled to make his first start of the year for the Bonnies.
GAME NOTES: Sunday's game will be played at the same location as Saturday's – the North Charlotte Regional Park … SBU was the visiting team in the neutral-site affair and will serve as the home team on Sunday.
