Men's Tennis Drops Weekend Matches To Duquesne, Cleveland St.

The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend to Duquesne and Cleveland State.

In their first Atlantic 10 match of the year, the Bonnies suffered a 5-2 loss to the Dukes on Friday at the SBU Fitness Center, before bowing to the Vikings, 6-1, in a non-conference meeting on Saturday night at Paramount Tennis Center in Westlake, Ohio.

St. Bonaventure falls to 2-5 on the spring season and has lost four consecutive matches.

The play of SBU's top doubles team was a bright spot in the setback to Duquesne (7-2, 1-1 Atlantic 10), as the senior tandem of Luis Guevara and Oscar Yanez edged the Dukes' top duo of Alex Aleman and Pete Carpenter, 9-8 (8). Guevara and Yanez improved to 10-5 on the season and dropped Aleman and Carpenter to 7-3.

Yanez also scored the Bonnies' lone singles victory over Duquesne, topping Carpenter, 6-3, 6-4, from the second position. SBU junior Elliot Fanshel (pictured) took the first set in his first singles match against Rich Robbie, but eventually fell, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

St. Bonaventure's third and final win against the Dukes came from the second doubles team of Fanshel and classmate Javier Ortiz, which defeated Max Rubin and Corey Robinson, 8-4, from the second position.

Against Cleveland State (3-6), Ortiz continued his strong spring season with a 6-4, 6-4, triumph over Joe Vanmeter at fourth singles. The victory was Ortiz's team-leading eighth of the year and moved him to 5-2 on the spring.

Guevara was also seeking his eighth individual win of the year, but the Venezuelan fell in three sets to Nolan Marks, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, at third singles. The remaining SBU singles players were defeated in straight sets against CSU.

In doubles competition, Yanez and Guevara were handed an 8-1 loss and Fanshel and Ortiz were edged 8-7 by Marks and Vanmeter.

The Bonnies next host a weekend doubleheader at the SBU Fitness Center against New Jersey Tech at 3 p.m. Saturday and IPFW at 11 a.m. Sunday.
