PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – For the third time in its first four games of the season, the St. Bonaventure baseball team (1-3) allowed a big 1st inning, this time falling behind 5-0 after just one out en route to 14-8 loss to Mount St. Mary's (3-4) on Tuesday afternoon.
In the setback, seniors Jason Radwan and Billy Urban both extended their hitting streaks to 18 and 12 games, respectively, as each collected a pair of hits and an RBI on the day. Classmate and fellow infielder Austin Ingraham (pictured) added a double, a single and an RBI of his own in his first multi-hit performance of the year. Freshman catcher Josh Martin, who entered for starter Nick Lohrer in the 6th inning, went 2-3 for his first collegiate hits.
For the game, the Mountaineers only out-hit the Bonnies by a 12-11 margin, but the Bona pitching staff walked 12 compared with six by The Mount. Six of those 12 base on balls by the Bonnies came to six consecutive batters in the 1st inning as freshman Steven Klimek struggled to find the zone in his first career appearance.
Mount St. Mary's built a lead as large as 12-0 in the 5th inning before the Bonnies got the board in the bottom half. Radwan singled home pinch hitter Mark Hutmacher with SBU's first run of the contest. Urban followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Jonathan Diaz before Justin Brozick delivered a 2-RBI single to score Brian Weightman and Radwan. Michael Meredith capped the five-run Bona 5th with a sacrifice fly to center to score Brozick.
Following the Bonnies' portion of the 5th inning, there was approximately a 45-minute rain delay. The Brown and White added two more runs in the 7th on an Ingraham double which plated Radwan and Urban with their second runs of the contest. SBU scored one more in the 9th on another sac fly by Meredith to bring home Urban.
Klimek (0-1) took the loss as the Rochester native lasted just 1/3 of an inning and surrendered five earned runs. Robert Nalepa relieved the right hander with 4.1 innings of work, allowing seven hits and six earned runs. Aaron Ballmer tossed 1.1 shutout innings, freshman Drew Teller allowed one run in two innings of work and Bo Watson pitched a one-run 9th inning.
