LEWISTON, N.Y. - Jenna Schlagenhauf scored three more goals to increase her team leading score total to 14 with her final talley giving the Bonnies a 7-6 advantage with just 1:00 to play. Niagara however scored thrice over the final minute to hand the Brown and White its first set back of the season.
The Bonnies took the first lead of the game, 1-0 when Erin Thomas weaved her way inside and scored her third goal of the season. Just five minutes later however the Purple Eagles stuck back, tying the score on a goal by Carrie-Jo Farrugia, her sixth.
With less than ten minutes to play in the first half, scoring picked up for both teams. The Bonnies struck first, taking a 2-1 advantage when Erin Thomas converted her second of the day on a free position shot. But with 7:15 to play in the opening frame, Niagara knotted the score a second time.
St. Bonaventure was able to re-claim the lead with 5:27 left but this time it was able to take a two-goal advantage on Jenna Schlagenhauf's first tally of the day. Niagara closed the gap just before halftime with a goal of their own but the Bonnies were able to take a 4-3 lead into the break.
In the second period, Niagara struck first to tie the score but the Bonnies wasted no time re-taking the lead when Jenna Schlagenhauf found herself open on the other end for her second score.
The Brown and White managed to hold that lead for just over three minutes when Niagara broke through the defense again and tied it up at five. The score would remain tied until Niagara finally took the lead with 11:56 to play in the game with another Carrie-Jo Farrugia score.
With 9:05 to play this time is was Marybeth Madia collecting a goal to tie it up for the Bonnies. From there the defenses for both teams took over. No team would muster a goal over the next eight minutes until Schlagenhauf took matters into her own hands and willed home the go-ahead goal for the Brown and White with 1:01 left.
But it was not to be. Niagara stormed out of the next face-off and tied the score, like they had done all evening, just 18 seconds later. They would score the game winning goal with 18 seconds remaining in the game then add an insurance tally with four seconds to play to seal the 9-7 victory, their first in series history.
The Bonnies, who fall to 3-1, will travel to Corning Memorial Stadium on Saturday for a neutral site affair with Siena. Faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
