CINCINNATI – Xavier (9-11, 3-0 Atlantic 10 Conference) raced out to fast starts in both games against the St. Bonaventure team (5-11, 0-3 A-10) Saturday afternoon en route to a doubleheader and three-game series sweep over the Bonnies by scores of 11-2 and 15-0.
Xavier torched Bonaventure pitching for 37 hits over the course of the two 9-inning games, which were originally scheduled to be played at McGraw-Jennings Field but were moved to Xavier's Hayden Field due to snow.
Billy Urban went 1-4 at the plate in the second game. His hit – a double to lead off the bottom of the 2nd – was the 200th of his career, joining just six other players in program history with at least 200 career hits. Urban and Jason Radwan (207) are just the second set of classmates in program history to have 200+ career hits (Brian Pellegrini, Joe Rizzo '07).
In the second game, Xavier – like it did all series – jumped out to an early lead as it plated a two-out run in the 1st inning and three two-out runs in the 2nd frame off SBU starter Steven Klimek to take a 4-0 lead. Klimek was relieved by Asa Johnson after just two innings, but Johnson was hit hard in his first inning of work and surrendered four runs as Bonaventure fell behind 8-0 entering the bottom of the 3rd.
The Musketeers – who earlier in the week announced they are leaving the A-10 to join the new Big East after this season – went on to score at least one run in every inning except the 6th and 9th.
Bonaventure managed just three hits off Xavier pitching in the second game – Urban's double, a Radwan single in the 7th and an Austin Ingraham double in the 9th – compared with 21 hits for the Musketeers.
In game one, Xavier jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning and added three unearned runs in the 4th and two more in the 5th to take a commanding 7-0 lead before Bonaventure had an answer. With just two hits through the first five innings, catcher Nick Lohrer (pictured) delivered SBU's third in the bottom of the 5th, sending his second home run of the year over the left-field wall to cut into the Bonnies' deficit, 7-2.
However, the Musketeers responded with a pair of home runs in the top of the 6th to make it a 10-2 game which knocked Bona starter Andrew Revello (1-3) out of the contest. The right hander allowed 10 runs (6 earned) on 12 hits, walked four and struck out two in suffering his third loss of the year. He was relieved by freshman Connor Grey, who allowed a run in the 7th but settled down after that, scattering four hits and striking out two.
Through the first two games of the series, Bonaventure's starters tossed 10.1 innings and allowed 19 runs on 24 hits. The Bona bullpen – Grey, Ryan Winton and Drew Teller – limited the Musketeers' bats over the other 7.2 innings to just four runs.
The Bonnies had just four hits in the first game, and they all came from the 7 through 9 batters: Jonathan Diaz, Nick Lohrer, Josh Martin (pinch hitter) and Brian Weightman. Lohrer's home run was just the fifth of the year by the Bonnies.
St. Bonaventure is scheduled to return to action at Canisius on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is planned for 3 p.m., and any changes will be announced on GoBonnies.com.
