Men's Tennis Hits The Road For Matches Vs. Binghamton, Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The St. Bonaventure men's tennis team will aim to build on two recent victories when it meets Binghamton and Yale this weekend at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. The Bonnies are scheduled to face the Bearcats at 3 p.m. Saturday and the Bulldogs at noon on Sunday.

St. Bonaventure has collected victories against Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne and Siena over each of the last two weekends at the SBU Fitness Center to improve its record to 4-7. Binghamton and Yale, however, will likely present greater challenges for the Bonnies.

The Bearcats, who had a string of four straight NCAA Tournament appearances snapped last year, boast a 5-7 record this season. Both Binghamton and SBU have lost to Cleveland State this spring by 4-3 and 6-1 scores, respectively.

Led by Robin Lesage (13-9 record) and Sid Hazarika (10-2), the Bearcats are 71-71 in singles matches this season. They are 25-32 in doubles play.

The last time the Bonnies and Bearcats met – last fall in the Navy Invitational – BU won six of seven singles matches and all three doubles against SBU.

Yale, which also is scheduled to face Binghamton on Saturday, has won seven of its last eight matches – with the only loss coming at UNC-Wilmington, 7-0, on March 14. The Bulldogs are 11-3 overall and 6-0 at home.

Yale is led by the doubles team of Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers, which is ranked 59th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

St. Bonaventure also has recent history against Yale. The Bulldogs scored a 7-0 victory over the Bonnies in a dual match last season and players from both squads met at the Yale Shootout this past October. In that event – which did not include team scoring – SBU players won just two of 23 singles and doubles matches contested against Yale players. Those victories were secured by junior Javier Ortiz, who posted a straight set singles victory over Tommy Ratchford, and by the doubles tandem of junior Elliot Fanshel and freshman Celso de Vera Rehberger, who edged Ratchford and Daniel Faierman.

Ortiz leads the Bonnies with 10 singles victories while seniors Oscar Yanez and Luis Guevara (pictured) have posted 10 wins each. In doubles play, Yanez and Guevara have partnered for a team-best 12-8 record.

After this weekend, the Bonnies hit the road for a trio of Atlantic 10 matches against Fordham, La Salle and Saint Joseph's on March 28-30.
