AMHERST, Mass. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team (10-17, 3-6 Atlantic 10 Conference) rallied to score five runs in the 7th inning and take a lead, but ultimately fell in the rubber match of its three-game series at Massachusetts (7-18, 3-6 A-10) Sunday afternoon, 6-5.
Senior Jason Radwan paced the Bonaventure offense again with a 3-5 day at the plate, including a run scored and an RBI. The second baseman continued his torrid start to the year as he increased his conference-leading batting average to .414 through the first 27 games of the campaign.
Billy Urban, hitting right behind Radwan in the Bona lineup, went 2-5 with an RBI, and freshman Thaddeus Johnson also added a multiple-hit performance for the Brown and White by going 2-4 with a run scored. Austin Ingraham, Bret Heath and Mark Hutmacher each had a hit for the Bonnies, who committed two errors to lead to one unearned run.
Being shut out, 4-0, entering the 7th, the Bonnies started their comeback effort with a leadoff walk to catcher Nick Lohrer, followed by a Johnson opposite-field double against the wall in the left. Lohrer scored on a single by Heath through the left side, while Johnson came around to score on a Michael Meredith sacrifice fly. After Ingraham singled to the left of the second baseman, Radwan laced a double down the left-field line to pull SBU within one at 4-3. The Bonnies then took the lead on an Urban single to center field.
However, UMass responded right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 7th to reclaim the lead and held on the for series triumph.
Freshman Steven Klimek started for the Bonnies, but lasted just three innings as he allowed five hits and four runs. Klimek was relieved by Joel Rosencrance, who shut down the Minutemen bats for the first three innings of his outing, but ran into trouble in the 7th and was credited for the loss after throwing 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and two runs. The right hander struck out five and walked just one. Freshman Connor Grey tossed the closing .2 of an inning.
St. Bonaventure is scheduled to return home to McGraw-Jennings Field for the first time in nearly three weeks and just the fourth time all year on Tuesday when it faces rival University at Buffalo in a doubleheader. First pitch of the two 7-inning games is set for 2 p.m. from Fred Handler Park.
