Women's Tennis Seeded 15th, Will Face Xavier In A-10 Tournament

A-10 Women's Championship Bracket

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – St.  Bonaventure is seeded 15th in the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship and will face second-seeded Xavier in a first-round match at noon on Thursday at Boar's Head Sports Club.

The A‐10 Championship features a four‐day, single‐elimination format. The winner will receive the conference's automatic bid to compete in the NCAA Tournament.

This marks the third straight year the Bonnies and Musketeers have met in the first round of the conference tournament. Xavier won both of the previous meetings by 4-0 scores.

The two teams also faced off on Saturday in the regular season finale, with the Musketeers prevailing 6-1 at the SBU Fitness Center. That win boosted Xavier to 17-5 overall and 9-0 against A-10 teams this season. The Bonnies, meanwhile, dropped to 3-16 and 1-5 in conference.

Sophomore Marisa Brossard registered her team-best 13th singles victory against the Musketeers and also teamed with classmate Fatya Amiri for a triumph at first doubles. Brossard's 6-2, 6-2 second singles win came over XU's freshman standout Alex Brinker, who had posted 20 consecutive victories this spring.

Amiri ranks second on the team with 11 singles victories, while senior Kathryn Kvas has added eight. Amiri and Brossard lead SBU with six doubles wins together.

The Bonnies were picked to finish 15th and the Musketeers were tabbed to take sixth in voting by the 16 Atlantic 10 coaches prior to the spring season.

The St. Bonaventure-Xavier winner will advance to face the winner of No. 7 Fordham vs. No. 10 Duquesne in a quarterfinal match at 1 p.m. Friday. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday and the final match is set for 10 a.m. Sunday.

Richmond has won the last four A-10 women's tennis titles and nine of the last 11. Since 2002, only one other school – Temple in 2003 and 2008 – has captured the conference championship.

Top-seeded VCU (18-4) is looking to take home a second consecutive conference title (the Rams won the Colonial Athletic Association crown in 2012) and make a 14th trip to the NCAA tournament. VCU is ranked 38th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
