PHILADELPHIA – The St. Bonaventure baseball team (8-14) allowed Saint Joseph's (15-16) to jump out to an early lead Sunday afternoon and never recovered en route to a rubber-match 7-3 loss to the Hawks.
Senior Jason Radwan (pictured) went 3-3 with a walk and a run scored out of the second position in the Bona lineup as he increased his Atlantic 10-leading batting average to .426. After going hitless in the series opener Friday, the second baseman responded with his second straight three-hit game and fifth of the year already in just 22 games. Radwan is now averaging nearly two hits per game as he's collected 40 base knocks in just 94 at bats.
Hitting right behind Radwan in the SBU lineup was Austin Ingraham, who supplied the Angola, N.Y. native with protection as he went 2-4 for Bona's only other multiple-hit performance of the afternoon. Joel Rosencrance, Billy Urban and pinch hitters Eric Jutca and Josh Martin all collected a hit for the Bonnies, with everyone save for Martin also adding an RBI.
Saint Joe's held a 3-0 lead after the 2nd inning off Bona starter Steven Klimek. The Bonnies got a run back in the 4th on an Urban single to plate Radwan, but immediately gave it back up in the bottom of the frame, starting a stretch of three straight innings in which the Hawks scored one run.
Bonaventure's second run of the contest came in the 6th inning when Rosencrance led off the stanza with a home run to right-center field on a 3-1 count, his first round-tripper of the season. Bona's last run came in the 9th as – with two outs – Martin singled through the left side before scoring a double in the gap by Jutca.
Klimek (1-3) took the loss as he lasted just 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned). The right hander struggled with his control as he walked four, threw two wild pitches and hit a batter. He was relieved by Connor Grey (1.2 innings, one hit, one run) and Drew Teller, Ryan Winton and Rosencrance, who each tossed one inning and allowed a run, with the exception of Winton.
The games between the two clubs do not count against either's A-10 record. St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's are both in the midst of their lone A-10 bye weekend of the year, but the two squads agreed to play a non-conference series in lieu of the off week.
St. Bonaventure is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Niagara beginning at 2 p.m. The Little Three rivals are set to play two, 7-inning games before the Bonnies return to conference action next weekend at Massachusetts.
