ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team (17-21, 7-10 Atlantic 10 Conference) carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning, but Rhode Island (27-21, 11-6 A-10) claimed a 3-2 victory on a walk-off single Saturday afternoon, leveling the three-game series at a game apiece.
Joel Rosencrance started for the Bonnies and tossed six shutout innings, limiting the Rams to just four hits – the second Bona starter in as many days to throw six or more innings and allow just four hits as Andrew Revello went 6.1 innings on Friday and surrendered only four base knocks. The junior struck out four and walked three in providing SBU with his best performance of the year in his most important start of the campaign.
However, the right hander's efforts went for naught as Rhody plated two runs in the 7th and won the game on a Kevin Stenhouse single to right field to score Jeff Roy, who led off the 9th inning with a triple off Bona reliever Ryan Winton.
Winton (4-2) was credited with the loss as he threw 1+ innings, allowing two hits and three walks. At the plate, Billy Urban and Thaddeus Johnson were the lone Bona batters with multiple hits as Urban went 3-4 with a run scored and Johnson continued his hot hitting with a 2-2 effort.
Johnson has now increased his batting average from .177 entering play on April 13 to a season-best .271 following Saturday's contest.
The Bonnies opened the scoring by plating two runs in the 6th, courtesy of three URI errors – two of which came on SBU sacrifice-bunt attempts. However, Rhody got both tallies back in the 7th as reliever Connor Grey allowed the Rams to load the bases before giving way to Asa Johnson, who gave up a sac fly and single. But the right hander got out of inning with the contest tied at 2-2 as both Rhode Island runs were credited to Grey.
Head coach Larry Sudbrook then turned the ball over to freshman Winton, who worked a scoreless 8th before running in to trouble in the 9th.
St. Bonaventure took game one of the series on Friday afternoon, 2-1, and will look to claim the rubber match on Sunday against the Rams. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. from Bill Beck Field.
NOTES: Jason Radwan went 1-4 at the plate and moved into a tie for 6th on the single-season hit list with 66, just four shy of moving into sole possession of 3rd place … he's also now just 18 hits shy of breaking the career-hit record of 262, set by Brian Pellegrini, '07 … Rosencrance, who also served as the designated hitter, went 1-4, while Nick Lohrer and pinch hitter Mark Hutmacher added the other two SBU hits.
