ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Strong defense and two first-half goals propelled St. Bonaventure to a 2-0 win over Robert Morris on Monday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
Six and a half minutes into the game, junior forward Molly Curry gave the Bonnies a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Stephanie Jenkins sent a long through pass to Curry for a near-breakaway, which she lofted past Colonials' keeper Chelsea DeJager.
In the 18th minute, senior midfielder Alyssa Lapp made it 2-0 when she received a crossing pass from junior Abby Maiello in the box and beat DeJager after a scramble. It was Lapp's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christina Sarokon and the Bonnies defenders kept the Colonials off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Sarokon, who finished with four saves, got a critical bit of help in the first half when Jenkins blocked a shot off a corner kick. Robert Morris also had an apparent goal called off with 11 minutes left in the second half after an offsides call.
The Colonials out-shot the Bonnies 10-7 and had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
St. Bonaventure improved to 3-6-1 with the win; it was the Bonnies' final non-conference game of the season. Robert Morris, which played its sixth consecutive road contest, fell to 4-5-1.
St. Bonaventure's next game will be Saturday evening at Richmond; game time is set for 7:30.
