PITTSBURGH, PA. – The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team (3-0) fell behind early but regained their composure to remain undefeated as they defeat the Incarnate Word Cardinals (1-2) by a score of 2-1.
The Cardinals got the ball rolling with an early score at the five minute mark. Junior midfielder Alex De La Garza took the lead pass up the left side of the field where he found himself one on one with SBU goalkeeper Jeremy Figler. De La Garza moved the ball back towards the middle where he was able to tuck the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for his second goal of the year. This is the first time this season that the Bonnies didn't score the first goal.
The Brown and White were able to respond later in the first half. The Bonnies earned a corner kick at the 30th minute where Brad Vanino was able to cross the ball into the box to find Garrett Pasono to head the ball in for his first goal on the season. With that assist Vanino currently stands fifth all-time in assists with 15. Bonaventure goes into the half tied 1-1 with Incarnate Word.
The Bonnies continue to surge after half-time with their second goal to make the score 2-1. Senior midfielder Emmett O'Connor maintains his dominant play on the year with his second goal in the 2013 campaign. Two minutes after the half started, O'Connor found himself with the ball from 30 yards out where he lined up his shot and snuck it by the Cardinals goalie into the bottom left corner which turned out to be the game-winning goal. This is the third game in a row that St. Bonaventure has been able to score inside the first ten minutes of the half.
"Emmett scored a great goal and we felt comfortable organizing our defense to the last whistle," said Coach Mel Mahler. The Brown and White would just do that. Their defense buckled down and withheld the Cardinals attack. Incarnate Word would be able to get off 13 shots on the SBU defense which required Figler to make seven saves.Â
Coach went on to say "Another good road win. To come back from a early 1-0 deficit says something about the characther or the boys." Coach Mahler also stated "UIW is a skillful team and caused different issues we had to deal with compared to our previous opponents. Now we have to regroup and get ready for Sunday's matchup versus Howard."Â
Bonaventure will go for their fourth victory in as many games on Sunday, Sept. 8 against Howard University. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.Â
