How It Happened

St. Bonaventure led for most of the first half, but lost control of the lead in the closing minutes of the opening 20 and eventually went into halftime trailing Dayton by five points, 40-35. Despite Katie Healy's fifth double-double of the season and second in as many games (21 points, 10 rebounds), the Bonnies struggled to convert crucial baskets at pivotal moments.  Healy recorded 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half to lead all players on the court in both categories. 21 of UD's points came from behind the arc (7-13), which was certainly the difference in the half as SBU shot 13-26 (50%) from the field and Dayton was 10-27 (37%) heading into the break. The Bonnies sent the Flyers to the free throw line where they converted on 13-16 in the first half compared to 6-8 for the Brown and White. SBU had five different players with two fouls heading into the second half of play.

Dayton's high powered offense, which was averaging just over 89 points per game entering tonight's contest lived up to its expectations in the second half. The Flyers would extend their lead to 21 points in the second half while holding the Bonnies scoreless for the first 10 minutes. This proved to be the difference in the game, as the Brown and White chipped away and began to knock down shots but could not overcome the deficit. In total, UD would outscore SBU 33-24 in the second half to claim the 14-point victory. The Bonnies, however, were able to hold the high-scoring Flyers to under 75 points for just the second time this season.

Beyond The Box score

The Bonnies had a strong contingent of fans at the game tonight to cheer them on against a very good Dayton team and a loud crowd on hand at UD Arena. Emily Michael, who grew up just outside of Dayton, was greeted by many friends and family in attendance.

St. Bonaventure finished the evening shooting 20-55 (36.4%) from the field while Dayton was 23-59 (39.0%), including 9-21 from behind the arc.

The UD bench outscored the SBU bench by 12 points, and UD held a 17 point margin in fast break points, eight point edge in second chance opportunities and four point advantage in points off turnovers.
