The Short Story: Derrick Colter's desperation three-pointer spelled heartbreak for St. Bonaventure on Saturday night. Colter went the length of the floor with 3.9 seconds left and just got off his shot before the horn sounded to give Duquesne an 83-81 win over the Bonnies.

St. Bonaventure led 81-80 after Charlon Kloof made two free throws with 13 seconds left. After a controversial foul call on Youssou Ndoye, Colter went to the line with six seconds left but missed both of his free throws. Andell Cumberbatch grabbed the rebound and was fouled, but he also missed two free throws, setting up Duquesne's final play.

The Bonnies drop to 12-8 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10.

Kloof led the Bonnies with 23 points while Matthew Wright scored 22 – 17 of which came in the second half.

St. Bonaventure Starters: #3 G Charlon Kloof, #23 G Andell Cumberbatch, #24 Matthew Wright, #33 F Marquise Simmons, #35 C Youssou Ndoye

How It Happened:

  • The hotly-contested game included 10 lead changes, five ties, 48 personal fouls, and two technical fouls. Three Bonnies (Dion Wright, Simmons and Ndoye) fouled out.
  • It also included better than 50 percent shooting by both teams; St. Bonaventure went 27-53 (.509) and Duquesne was 26-47 (.553). The teams each made 11 three-pointers.
  • Both teams shot well during a high-scoring first half; the Bonnies were 17-31 (54 percent) while Duquesne was 12-22 (54 percent).
  • Charlon Kloof knocked down a baseline jumper just before the halftime horn that gave the Bonnies a 44-38 lead at the break. It was the 16th time this season that the Bonnies led at halftime.
  • The Bonnies well could have been farther ahead if not for the shooting of Dukes guard Micah Mason, who made four of his five three-point shots in the opening 20 minutes. Duquesne went 6-12 from long range in the first half.
  • Marquise Simmons helped spark the Bonnies with nine points in the first half.
  • The Bonnies led by six when early in the second half when Duquesne surged back with a 13-1 run that included four straight three-pointers. That run gave the Dukes a 59-53 lead with 14:21 left.
  • Led by Matthew Wright, St. Bonaventure climbed back and eventually retook the lead on Wright's three-pointer at the 9:05 mark that made it 68-66.
  • It was a one-point Bona lead when Simmons tipped in a Wright miss with 1:57 left to make it 76-73.
  • Ovio Soko, who went 13-20 at the free throw line on the night, scored consecutive possessions to put Duquesne back in front 78-76 with 59 seconds left.
  • On a called play, Matthew Wright drained a three-pointer from the top of the key to put St. Bonaventure up 79-78 with 47 seconds remaining.
  • After Dion Wright was whistled for his fifth foul on a block with 21 ticks left, Soko made two more free throws to make it 80-79 favor the Dukes.
  • Following a Bona timeout, Kloof then drove the right side of the lane and was fouled by Soko, setting up the final plays described in the opening paragraphs.
  • The Bonnies hurt themselves by missing 10 free throws (16-26). It is the fourth loss this season in which St. Bonaventure has missed at least 10 free throws.

Beyond the Box Score:

  • The Bonnies' 11 three-pointers and .524 percentage were both season bests, topping the previous high of 10 set against both Southern Illinois and Cornell and 50 percent shooting from long range at Iona.
  • Kloof's five three-pointers (of 8 attempted) are a new career high.
  • Kloof ended up one point short of tying his career high of 24 set earlier this season against Louisiana Tech.
  • Matthew Wright's 22-point night was his fifth 20-point game this season. He also had four assists with no turnovers.
  • Saturday was the first meeting in this season's home-and-home series between St. Bonaventure and Duquesne; they will play again on Feb. 19 at the Reilly Center.
  • Saturday was the 111th meeting between the schools; the series is now 58-53 favor Duquesne.
