The Starting Five Notes:

1. St. Bonaventure looks to regain the Franciscan Cup in this annual meeting between the sister schools. Since the Franciscan Cup was created in 2010, the Bonnies have won three of four meetings. Last year in Albany, Siena claimed a 72-70 win when Marquis Wright scored just prior to the final buzzer.

2. The Bonnies have confidence from a 77-57 season-opening win over Dartmouth at the Reilly Center last Saturday night. While it was a one-point game at halftime (favor Bona), the second half was a different story as shots began to fall, including 7-for-10 from three-point range, and the Bonnies' defensive pressure created turnovers.

3. This year's team captains, seniors Youssou Ndoye and Jordan Gathers, did not even play in the opener. Ndoye, who sat out the Dartmouth game due to an NCAA ruling that he played in an impermissible summer game, will return against Siena. Gathers is questionable; he is still recovering from surgery on his right hip in June.

4. Depth was a key for the Bonnies in the opener and should be all season. In the win over Dartmouth, nine players scored with five reaching double figures. The all-new backcourt of freshman Jaylen Adams and junior Marcus Posley both scored 16 points.

5. Veterans Dion Wright (14 points/7 rebounds) and Andell Cumberbatch (10 pts/10 rebs/six assists) both started strong in the win over Dartmouth.

The Series/Last Meeting
• This will be the 37th meeting between the schools; St. Bonaventure leads the all-time series 28-8.
• Last year in Albany, Siena broke a five-game Bona winning streak in the series with a 72-70 decision. Marquis Wright scored on an off-balance drive just before the final horn. St. Bonaventure missed 14 free throws in the contest.

Jay Adams Makes Several Firsts
While first-year players typically don't play major roles on Mark Schmidt-coached teams, several of the Bonnies' six newcomers figured to earn extended playing time this season. That estimation proved accurate in the win over Dartmouth, especially in the case of freshman point guard Jay Adams. Adams became the first freshman guard to start since Mark Schmidt's first season of 2007-08 (Andrew Nicholson, a power forward, did start as a freshman in 2008-09; Malcolm Eleby was the freshman guard who started in 2007). After slow start offensively, Adams got hot in the second half and made four three-pointers; which are the most three-pointers made by a freshman since Mark Schmidt became St. Bonaventure's head coach and the most by any St. Bonaventure freshman since Mike Gansey made five at La Salle on Jan. 10, 2002. Adams' 16 points were the most scored in a college debut by a Bona freshman under Schmidt.

Five In Double Figures
In the win over Dartmouth Nov. 15, five St. Bonaventure players scored in double figures: Marcus Posley 16, Jay Adams 16, Dion Wright 14, Jalen Adams 11, and Andell Cumberbatch 10. It marked the first time since a 102-89 win at Iona on Dec. 14, 2013, that five Bona players reached double figures in the same game.

Posley Makes Immediate Impact
Replacing 2014 graduate Matthew Wright, who averaged 16.3 points per game last season and scored over 1,000 career points, certainly is not a task that can fall on one player this year. Marcus Posley, however, is playing in Wright's position of shooting guard, and there is reason to believe that the junior will be a productive player. The Rockford, Ill., native started his St. Bonaventure career with a 16-point game in the win over Dartmouth. Posley accounted for nearly half of St. Bonaventure's points in the first half, scoring 12 of the Bonnies' total of 28. Posley has scored at the Division I level before; as a freshman at Ball State in 2012-13, he averaged 6.5 points per game. Last season at Indian Hills Junior College, he averaged 13.5 points a game.

Shaking Off The Rust
Bonnies fans had to wait an extra year to see guard Jalen Adams in action; the Saginaw, Michigan, native red-shirted last year. He spent the year acclimating to St. Bonaventure and was able to participate in practices. In his debut game, Adams was able to make a positive impact by scoring 11 points -- all in the second half. Adams came off the bench and made both of his three-point attempts. He also got to the free throw line twice and made 3-of-4 shots there.

Siena Notes

• Siena opened the year with a 95-87 loss at UMass last Friday. Rob Poole scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures. The Saints outrebounded UMass 43-39. Siena then dropped an 84-76 decision to Vermont at home Monday.

• Siena was predicted to finish second in the MAAC this season behind Iona. The Saints returned 99 percent of their scoring from a 20-18 team that won the postseason CBI.

• Senior shooting guard Rob Poole, who averaged 14.6 points per game last season, was named to the 2014 All-MAAC preseason first team.

• Sophomore point guard Marquis Wright averaged 8.7 points and 5.2 assists per game as a freshman.

• Junior forward Brett Bisping was named to the All-MAAC preseason third team. He averaged 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season.

• Senior center Imoh Silas sustained a torn ACL in his left knee in the preseason. He had 63 blocks last year.
