The Short Story:
Battling until the final horn, St. Bonaventure came up just short at Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon, falling 58-54.
The Bonnies had a chance to tie the game at 55 with five seconds left when freshman point guard Jaylen Adams was fouled while attempting a three-pointer. Adams missed the second of his three free throws, and the Bonnies were forced to foul. Pitt made three of its last four free throws to escape with its 26th straight non-conference win at Petersen Events Center.
St. Bonaventure led 25-24 at halftime but Pitt controlled the early part of the second half, eventually leading by as many as 11 points. It was a 44-37 game when Bonnies rallied, scoring 10 unanswered points to take a 47-44 lead with 5:00 remaining.
A minute later, Pitt tied the game on a Josh Newkirk three-pointer. Pitt then got two more field goals to go ahead by three, 51-48, with 2:07 left. It was a four-point lead when Marcus Posley drove the lane and scored with 27 seconds left to make it 52-50. The teams traded two free throws each before the Michael Young made one of two at the line to put Pitt ahead 55-52 with 19 seconds left.
Posley led all scorers with 17 points, while Dion Wright had 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double this year. Adams finished with nine points while Ndoye totaled eight points and 11 rebounds.
As they have all season, the Bonnies showed their competitiveness by outrebounding Pitt 37-33 and holding the Panthers to 40 percent shooting.
How It Happened:
- Andell Cumberbatch scored both of the Bonnies' first two field goals of the game, a drive for a layup and a three-pointer. Pitt led 7-5 at the first media timeout.
- The Bonnies had trouble early against the active Panther defense, which forced eight Bona turnovers in the first nine minutes.
- Pitt led 11-5 at the second media timeout but Dion Wright sparked a 6-0 run that tied the game. Wright had back-to-back scores inside.
- Jaylen Adams stole a pass and drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 18 with 6:32 to go in the first half.
- The game was tied at 20 when Marcus Posley made a long three-pointer to give the Bonnies a 23-20 lead.
- St. Bonaventure got a defensive stop on Pitt's final possession of the first half and led 25-24 at halftime. It marked the fifth time this season the Bonnies have held the lead at halftime.
- After its early turnover problems, St. Bonaventure settled down and only had one turnover in the final 11 minutes of the opening half.
- The Bonnies outrebounded the Panthers 21-17 in the first half.
- At the start of the second half, Pitt began attacking the basket led by point guard James Robinson. It was a tie game at 29-29 when Pitt scored eight straight points to go up 37-29.
- Youssou Ndoye made two free throws to slow the run, but Pitt made a three-pointer and then a layup to take its largest lead of the day at 42-31 with 11:09 to play.
- St. Bonaventure put an end to the Pitt run when Posley drained a three-pointer. After an Ndoye free throw, Dion Wright's slam dunk on a fastbreak cut the deficit to 42-37.
- It was a 44-37 game when Bonnies rallied, scoring 10 unanswered points. The Bonnies gained their first lead of the second half with 5:33 left when Denzel Gregg put back a miss by Jay Adams. Dion Wright followed that with a twisting layup to give Bona a 47-44 lead with 5:00 remaining.
- Pitt tied the game at 47 on a three-pointer by Josh Newkirk.
- It was a four-point lead when Marcus Posley drove the lane and scored with 27 seconds left to make it 52-50.
