The Short Story: St. Bonaventure used three-point shooting and strong defense in the second half to earn a 69-51 win at Binghamton (1-12) on Saturday afternoon. The Bonnies improved to 7-2 with the win, tying their best start since the 2001-02 season.
It was still a close game early in the second half when the Bonnies pulled away with a 9-0 run that made it an 47-36 game with 9:54 remaining. St. Bonaventure continued to expand its lead from there, going ahead by as many as 21 points. The Bonnies went 7-12 from three-point range in the second half.
Marcus Posley led St. Bonaventure with 20 points while Dion Wright scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Jaylen Adams also scored 15 points and Youssou Ndoye had seven points and 13 rebounds.
How It Happened:
- The Bonnies led 6-2 at the first media timeout on scores by Andell Cumberbatch, Marcus Posley and Dion Wright.
- St. Bonaventure extended its lead to 12-4 before Binghamton switched to a 2-3 zone defense and began to climb back.
- The Bearcats cut their deficit to 18-16 on a jumper by Nick Madray at the 5:55 mark.
- St. Bonaventure regrouped and scored the next six points to push the lead to 24-16; Jay Adams capped the surge with a free throw.
- Binghamton scored six of the last eight points of the half, however, and the Bonnies led 26-22 at halftime.
- Jaylen Adams made a three-pointer at the 17:18 mark of the second half that put St. Bonaventure ahead by 10 at 34-24.
- Binghamton answered with a 10-1 run that made it a one-point game at 35-34.
- The Bonnies never relinquished the lead, though. It was a 38-36 game when the Bonnies took control with nine unanswered points. Posley's third three-pointer of the second half capped the run which ended with Bona in front 47-36 with 9:54 left.
- St. Bonaventure continued to grow its lead, using a 10-2 run to open its biggest lead of the game, 65-44 with 4:40 remaining.
- Defense was a key to the Bonnies' second half improvement. In the half, the Bonnies limited Binghamton to 10-29 shooting (34.5 percent). The Bearcats shot 37.7 percent for the game.
- Rebounding was also a factor in the second half as the Bonnies enjoyed a 24-13 advantage over the final 20 minutes. For the game, St. Bonaventure held a 45-30 edge on the glass.
- St. Bonaventure, which employed a 1-3-1 press for part of the second half, wound up forcing 20 BU turnovers for the game and scored 30 points off those turnovers.
Beyond the Box Score:
- The 51 points scored by Binghamton are the fewest allowed by the Bonnies this season; the previous low was 53 by Canisius.
- St. Bonaventure has now held seven of its nine opponents under 40 percent field goal shooting.
- Posley now has four games of 20-plus points and has scored in double figures in eight of nine games this season.
- Youssou Ndoye's 13 rebounds tied his season high and were one off his career best. He now has seven consecutive games of 10 rebounds or more.
- Dion Wright's double-double was his third this season and fourth of his career.
- St. Bonaventure is now 3-1 on the road this season.
- The Bonnies now lead the series with Binghamton 4-1.
- The crowd of 3,123 included a large contingent of Bonnies fans, who stood and cheered over the final minute of the game.
