The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team led into the fifth inning against the Kansas Jayhawks, but faltered as Kansas scored three runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back en route to a 9-4 victory over the Bonnies on Monday afternoon. Despite giving up the first run of the game in the first, SBU answered back quickly to give itself a 2-1 lead in the third inning. After allowing a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game up, Bonaventure tacked on its third run in the top of the fifth after an error from the KU third-baseman that allowed Joel Rosencrance to score. The Kansas' bats heated up in fifth and continued to stay hot as they scored seven runs in the final four innings to ultimately clinch their five-run victory.

How It Happened:

  • The Kansas Jayhawks found themselves on the scoreboard first after a wild pitch from Asa Johnson that resulted in a Justin Protacio run.
  • In the third inning, St. Bonaventure pushed through two runs on two hits. Jonathan Diaz started the run for the Bonnies after a double down the left-field line that brought home Tommy Styn. Two batters later, Dylan Dunn drove in the second run of the inning for the Brown and White off a single up the middle.
  • After Michael Suiter laid down a bunt for a single and reached second-base off a throwing error, Dakota Smith doubled to left center in which allowed Suiter to tie up the ballgame, 2-2.
  • The Bonnies reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth after Joel Rosencrance scored off a throwing error from the third-baseman trying to get Bret Heath out at first.
  • In the next frame, Kansas tallied three runs including a two-run triple from McKay. At the next at bat, Smith drove in his second RBI of the game after a single down the left-side.
  • Kansas extended their lead by three in the sixth off a pinch-hit homerun.
  • KU continued to push their lead in the seventh after the line-up combined for three runs on three hits.
  • SBU was able to get a run back in the top of the eighth when Bret Heath scored off an Andy LaLonde groundball to the shortstop that resulted in a throwing error.
