The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team jumped out to an early two-run lead but squandered the advantage in the sixth to result in its 6-2 loss to the Omaha Mavericks on Tuesday, February 25 in Port Charlotte, Fla. In the third inning, Dylan Dunn drove in two-runs off a single to left field. The lead wouldn't last long for the Bonnies, as the Mavericks were able to tack on two runs for themselves in the top of the fifth. After tying the score, Omaha scored in the following two innings recording four runs in total. The Bonnies went down in order in the final two innings.
How It Happened:
- The red hot Dylan Dunn delivered once again in the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded he connected on a single to bring in Tommy Styn and Jonathan Diaz to give the Brown and White a 2-0 lead.
- In the next inning, St. Bonaventure got a runner in scoring position but failed to capitalize on its opportunity as Brian Weightman stole second-base.
- The Mavericks found life in their bats in the fifth inning after three straight singles that resulted in one run. Later in the inning, Clayton Taylor drove in the second run to tie the ballgame.
- Omaha took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning after Cole Gruber drove in Collin Leif from a single to left field.
- Nebraska-Omaha registered three more runs in the seventh. Taylor started the inning with a home run to right. The Mavericks recorded their second run of the inning off the bat of Connor Messinger, who doubled to centerfield. Two batters later, Tyler Splichal earned a base hit down the right field line to score Messinger.
- Thad Johnson came in relief for the second-straight game and threw for two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and only allowing one hit.
