The Short Story: St. Bonaventure experienced one of its toughest shooting games of the season and fell 67-48 to Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament.

The Bonnies and Hawks were tied at 29-29 at halftime but in the second half, St. Bonaventure's offense went cold, connecting on only four field goals in the half.

The loss ended a valiant run for the Bonnies, who knocked off LaSalle and then top-seeded Saint Louis to reach the semifinals.

St. Bonaventure will now await word on a potential NIT, CBI or CIT bid.

St. Bonaventure Starters: #3 G Charlon Kloof, #24 Matthew Wright, #5 G Jordan Gathers, #33 F Marquise Simmons, #35 C Youssou Ndoye

How It Happened:

  • Behind Youssou Ndoye and Marquise Simmons, the Bonnies got off to a solid start. Ndoye had six points early and Simmons four as the Bonnies led 10-5 at the first media timeout.
  • Ndoye picked up his second foul at the 14:15 mark of the first half.
  • After Ndoye went to the bench, the Bonnies' offense went cold and Saint Joseph's climbed back with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 19-19.
  • The Hawks took a 24-23 lead on a three-pointer by Halil Kanacevic at the 6:01 mark.
  • Ronald Roberts scored inside with 2:30 left in the opening half to make it 28-25 Saint Joseph's.
  • Andell Cumberbatch sank a pair of free throws to pull the Bonnies back within one.
  • After one free throw by Kanacevic, Charlon Kloof scored on an off-balance drive down the lane to tie the game at 29 with 33 seconds left until halftime.
  • Kloof missed a long three-pointer just prior to the half and the teams went into intermission tied at 29-29.
  • St. Bonaventure went 11-35 (31 percent) from the field in the first half.
  • Kanacevic controlled much of the first half, ending with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
  • St. Joseph's opened the second half with a 9-4 run to make it 38-33 after a Kanacevic score.
  • The Hawks took control of the game with an 8-0 from there that made it 46-33 with 11:03 to play.
  • The Bonnies' shots, particularly in the paint, refused to fall; St. Bonaventure missed eight shots in a row during one stretch.
  • Jordan Gathers broke that slump with a jumper to make it 46-35 with 10:43 left.
  • Matthew Wright was bottled up by the Hawks defense most of the day; he finally got his first field goal with 10:04 remaining to make it a 46-38 game.
  • Wright's two free throws made it a 49-40 game, but Saint Joseph's then scored six straight points -- four free throws by Roberts and a layup by Langston Galloway – to open a 55-40 lead with 7:11 left in the game.
  • The Bonnies were not able to close the gap the rest of the way.
  • St. Bonaventure went 15-59 (25 percent) from the field, incluiding 2-15 (13 percent) from three-point range, and its 48 points are a season low.
  • Charlon Kloof was the only St. Bonaventure player to reach double figures with 10 points. Gathers finished with nine, Ndoye had seven and Matthew Wright was limited to six.
  • Kanacevic led the Hawks with 26 points and 17 rebounds, while Galloway scored 18 points.
  • The Hawks won the rebounding battle 42-36. Ndoye led the Bonnies with eight boards and Simmons grabbed seven.

 Beyond the Box Score:

  • St. Bonaventure was playing in its second A-10 Tournament semifinal game in three seasons.
  • The loss ended a run of five straight wins by the Bonnies in A-10 Tournament games, a school record (3-0 in 2012 and the first two this year).
  • The Bonnies' 18 wins are their second-most in head coach Mark Schmidt's seven seasons.

Up Next: St. Bonaventure will now await word on a potential NIT, CBI or CIT bid. The NIT field will be announced late Sunday night.
