The Short Story:
The seventh-seeded, Duquesne, triumphed over the No. 10 St. Bonaventure Bonnies in the opening round of the 2014 Atlantic 10 women's tennis championship at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Thursday, April 24 by a score of 4-1.
The Dukes won the doubles point on a victory at No. 2 when Sarah Shashura and Megan Wasson defeated Fatya Amiri and Mariam Skhirtladze, 8-3. Duquesne clinched the doubles point due to a St. Bonaventure default at No. 3 doubles.
The Bonnies won No. 1 singles behind Marisa Brossard's 6-2, 6-1 win over Judy Li. Duquesne bounced back with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Chandler Consonery defeated Skhirtadze 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 and Alrissa Tobe beat Taylor Cole at No. 5, 6-2, 6-3. Duquesne won No. 6 singles by default to secure the 4-1 win.
The Florida native, Brossard, finished her 2014 campaign with a team-high 15 victories and a team-low five losses. She ends the season on a three-game winning streak. Brossard's junior counterpart, Amiri, recorded 14 wins this season, including a total of nine wins in the No. 1 singles position. Mara Martinez-Santori also had a strong season as she notched 14 victories.
