The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team was in spoiler mode on Friday, May 16 as they defeated the George Washington Colonials by a score of 4-3. The Colonials entered the game today in eighth place, one spot out of earning a spot in the Atlantic 10 baseball championship, but with Friday's lost bumps them down to ninth place.
St. Bonaventure was led by Thad Johnson and Bret Heath as each of them played a key part in Friday's victory for the Bonnies. Johnson recorded four hits on the day, including a triple to right center that opened up the game for the first run. Johnson continued his strong day on the mound as he posted his first win of his career in relief. Johnson threw for 1.1 innings pitched and didn't allow a single hit. Heath assisted in the win by knocking his second career homerun to left field for the game-winning run in the eighth inning.
Colin Milon (2-4) took the lost for the Colonials as he also came into pitch in relief. Milon tossed three innings and allowed one run and three hits.
How It Happened:
- St. Bonaventure got the game rolling in the bottom of the first as Thad Johnson drilled the ball to right center for a triple. After a walk and a hit-batter, Tyler Bell connected on a sac-fly that went down the left-field line, which scored Johnson from third.
- The Bonnies held a one-run lead until the fifth inning, when SBU doubled the lead off an error on the shortstop. Dylan Dunn singled to the shortstop but the ball bounced off the GW player and went into foul territory and allowed Johnson to score from second.
- In the next frame, George Washington rallied back to tie the ballgame up. Andrew Selby brought in the first runner for the Colonials as he recorded a triple to right center that scored Joey Bartosic. In the next at-bat, Bobby Campbell grounded out to the second-baseman, but advanced Selby for the run.
- With the game tied at two apiece, Daniel Trimble pulled off the squeeze bunt play with runners on the corners as Heath came home to score. After six innings of play the Brown and White led 3-2.
- The Colonials wouldn't go down easy as they fought back in the top of the eighth as Kevin Mahala reached first on an error that allowed Ryan Xepoleas to score on the mistake from the third-baseman.
- The Bonnies' right-fielder, Bret Heath, put SBU back atop of the ballgame with one-swing of the bat as he led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo homerun to left field.
