Box Score Final Score: Buffalo 1, St. Bonaventure 0
Records: St. Bonaventure 0-1 | Buffalo 1-0
Location: UB Stadium (Buffalo, N.Y.)
The Short Story: St. Bonaventure could not generate much offense and fell 1-0 in its season opener on Friday night.
After a scoreless first half, Buffalo broke the deadlock in the 69th minute. Celina Carrero dribbled to the top of the box, eluded two Bona defenders and threaded a pass to teammate Julia Bernati, who was alone to the right of Bonnies' keeper Christina Sarokon and beat her with a shot low to Sarokon's right.
The Bonnies pressed for the equalizer but could not get on the scoreboard.
Inside The Stats / Game Notes:
- Buffalo had the better of possession time in the game, especially in the second half.
- Sarokon, a junior who was playing close to her hometown of North Tonawanda, made eight saves for the night, several of a spectacular fashion, to keep the Bonnies in the game.
- UB out-shot the Bonnies 18-9 for the game, including 10-4 in the second half. The Bonnies got four shots on goal against UB keeper Laura Dougall – two by Lauren Hill.
- St. Bonaventure coach Steve Brdarski started one freshman, forward Danielle Vis, and subbed in two others, Reilly Dougherty and Kathryn Tarnai.
- This is the second year in a row Buffalo has defeated the Bonnies.
- UB debuted its new turf inside UB Stadium, which is the same A-Turf product that is being installed at St. Bonaventure.
Next Up: The Bonnies will take on Kent State this Sunday, Aug. 24, at 1:00 at Bradford High School's Parkway Field. The game was supposed to have been played at St. Bonaventure, but had to be moved because renovations to McGraw-Jennings Field are still on-going.
