The Starting Five Notes:
1. St. Bonaventure makes the short trip south to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne in the first game of this season's home-and-home series. The Bonnies are riding the momentum of a two-game winning streak that improved their A-10 record to 3-2. Last season, the teams split their season series, each winning on their home court. This is the 64th consecutive season the teams have met.
2. Junior guard Marcus Posley, who is in his first season at St. Bonaventure, is the leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 at 17.4 points per game. His eight 20-point games are tied for the most in the A-10. Last week, Posley scored 22 points against George Mason and 23 against Saint Joseph's.
3. Senior center Youssou Ndoye was last week's A-10 Co-Player of the Week. The 7-footer set a career high with 28 points against George Mason. He averaged 21.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks over two wins last week. Ndoye leads the A-10 in blocked shots (2.9/game) and ranks second in rebounding (10.7).
4. Junior forward Dion Wright has become a consistent scorer and rebounder. A big part of why the Bonnies are one of the A-10's best rebounding teams, Wright stands second on the team in both scoring (12.1) and rebounding (7.1). His 3.2 offensive rebounds per game are sixth-best in the Atlantic 10.
5. St. Bonaventure is one of only four Division I teams who have five players averaging at least 10 points per game. The others are Davidson, Iowa State and UNC Greensboro.
Series Notes: This will be the 113th meeting between the longtime Atlantic 10 Conference rivals. The teams split last season's series, each team winning on its home floor. St. Bonaventure has claimed four of the last five meetings but trails in the all-time series 58-54. The first meeting between the schools was on Feb. 13, 1920.
Duquesne Notes:
• The Dukes have dropped their last three games, falling at home to Rhode Island, at Saint Louis and at home (Consol Energy Center) to #17 VCU.
• Duquesne is heavily dependent on three-pointers. The Dukes take 22 per game and make 8.2 per game, third in the A-10. Guards Derrick Colter (.527) and Micah Mason (.423) rank second and eighth, respectively, in the A-10 in three-point percentage. Colter leads Duquesne in scoring at 12.5 points per game while Mason is at 10.6.
• The Dukes are a deep team who have nine players averaging better than 13 minutes per game. Jordan Stevens (9.5 ppg), TySean Powell (8.5), Dominique McKoy (6.0) and L.G. Gill (5.9) are the Dukes' other top scorers. McKoy leads Duquesne in rebounding with a 5.2 average.
St. Bonaventure's Last Game: Bonnies 70, Saint Joseph's 61
Marcus Posley scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half to lead St. Bonaventure to a 70-61 win over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at the Reilly Center. The Bonnies improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference with their second straight win.
The Bonnies trailed 29-28 at halftime but took their first lead of the game on a steal and breakaway dunk by senior center Youssou Ndoye that made it 37-35 with 15:21 remaining. The lead grew to 48-39 before the Hawks rallied to pull within 48-46. The game remained close the rest of the way, and a three-pointer by Isaiah Miles closed the Bonnies' lead to 55-54 with 5:35 left. St. Bonaventure answered, though, with a jumper by reserve Denzel Gregg followed by a Posley three-pointer to push the lead back to six points at 60-54 with 2:41 to play. The Bonnies went 8-8 at the free throw line over the final 2:13 to secure the win.
Ndoye finished with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Dion Wright scored 14 points and Andell Cumberbatch added nine for the Bonnies. St. Bonaventure had a season-high 18 assists on its 25 field goals and committed only seven turnovers to the Hawks' 13.
Posley Leads A-10 In Scoring
Marcus Posley has gained the confidence of Bonnies coaches and fans with his consistent play.
• After scoring at least 16 points in eight of the last nine games, he leads the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 17.4 points per game.
• Posley has eight 20-point games this season, the most of any A-10 player, topped by a career high 26 vs. Maryland Eastern Shore.
• He has scored in double figures in 14 of 16 games.
• Shoots 40 percent overall – 35 percent from three-point range. Posley is 45-126 on three-pointers, good for second in the A-10 in three-point field goals per game (2.9).
Ndoye Named A-10 Co-Player of the Week
After leading St. Bonaventure to a pair of wins, senior center Youssou Ndoye was named the Atlantic 10 Conference co-Player of the Week for the period that ended Jan. 18. He shares the award with Dayton forward Dyshawn Pierre.
The 7-foot, 250 lb. Ndoye was dominant in the Bonnies' wins last week. In a 75-55 win over George Mason on Jan. 14, he scored a career-high 28 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked three shots. Jan. 18, in a 70-61 win over Saint Joseph's, Ndoye scored 15 points and totaled six rebounds, a career-best five assists, and three blocks. For the week, Ndoye averaged 21.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks while shooting 13-15 (.867) from the field and 17-21 (.810) from the free throw line. This is the first time in Ndoye's career that he has earned an A-10 Player of the Week citation.
The Trifecta
St. Bonaventure's coaching staff often references how they want their teams to be strong in three key areas - defense, rebounding and taking care of the basketball. So far this season, the Bonnies have performed well. They rank sixth in the A-10 in scoring defense (64.2 ppg), fourth in defensive field goal percentage (.414) and second in blocked shots (4.8 per game). A strong rebounding team thanks in large part to Youssou Ndoye and Dion Wright, St. Bonaventure has a rebound margin of +4.7 per game, which is fourth-best in the A-10, and ranks second in the conference in total rebounds per game (37.8). Finally, even with a new backcourt this season in Jay Adams and Marcus Posley, the Bonnies are one of the A-10's better teams in terms of turnover margin (third at +1.8) and assist-to-turnover ratio (sixth at +1.0).
