St. Bonaventure Starters: #3 G Marcus Posley, #10 G Jaylen Adams, #1 G Idris Taqqee, #21 F Dion Wright, #20 F Derrick Woods
St. Bonaventure dominated from the opening tip in a 108-48 exhibition win over Division II Mansfield on Saturday afternoon in the Reilly Center.
With their new, up-tempo style on display, the Bonnies jumped out to a 21-4 lead eight minutes into the game and were never threatened. In the first half, St. Bonaventure made 22 of 37 shots en route to a 59-18 lead at the break. Without a true center this season, the Bonnies' smaller, quicker lineup pressured Mansfield into 15 turnovers in the first half.
For the game, the Bonnies came up with 13 steals and converted the Mountaineers' 21 turnovers into 33 points.
Denzel Gregg led all scorers with 23 points. In all, seven of the nine Bonnies who saw action scored in double figures. Jaylen Adams finished with 19 points, while Marcus Posley, Idris Taqqee and freshman Derrick Woods all recorded 12 points.
Taqqee, who started the game in a three-guard Bona lineup, grabbed 13 rebounds as the Bonnies out-rebounded Mansfield 50-31. Woods corralled nine boards and Dion Wright had eight to go with his 11 points.
Posley and Wright saw limited minutes, particularly in the second half, ending at 17 and 23, respectively, which coach Mark Schmidt said was by design regardless of the score.
Freshman guard Nelson Kaputo enjoyed a solid debut with 11 points and four assists. He went 3-for-7 from three-point range.
As a team, the Bonnies were 9-for-28 from long range. Gregg made two of his four shots from behind the arc.
Quotes from @BonniesMBB Coach Mark Schmidt
"This was like a quiz, and we passed it. The first real test is next Friday (the opener against Binghamton). We saw some good things today and some not so good things. If I had to give us a grade, I'd say C+ to B-. We have to get better starting with practice Monday."
"There's not one guy that played their "A" game. There's a lot of work to do. But there we had some bright spots as well."
"We want to play fast and I thought we could have played faster, sometimes we didn't run all the time. We could have shot better, we could execute better, but we're still a work in progress. I thought at times we didn't play the way we wanted to offensively. We're not the biggest team, especially with the injuries we have, so we have to be able to space it out and shoot the ball from the perimeter."
Up Next: St. Bonaventure will host Binghamton in the regular season opener next Friday, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m. The later than normal start time is due to the St. Bonaventure women hosting Siena in the preseason WNIT at 5:30. A men's game ticket will be required for admission to the doubleheader.
