The Starting Five Notes:
1. Entering the final, six-game stretch of the season, St. Bonaventure hosts Richmond in the second meeting between the schools this season. The teams enter the week tied for seventh place in the A-10 at 6-6. In the first meeting between these teams on Jan. 11 in Richmond, the Spiders prevailed 60-41.
2. Junior Iakeem Alston is expected to make his second start in place of freshman Jay Adams, who is out indefinitely due to a fracture/dislocation of the ring finger on his right hand. Alston scored a career high 11 points with three assists in 30 minutes of action last Saturday at Dayton.
3. St. Bonaventure's anchor in the middle, 7-foot senior center Youssou Ndoye, is second in the A-10 in both rebounding (10.5) and blocked shots (2.8/game). Five of his eight double-doubles this season have been against Atlantic 10 opponents, most recently 16 points and 12 rebounds at Dayton.
4. Marcus Posley is the fifth-leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 at 16.7 points per game. He hopes to shake off a cold spell where he went 1-17 from three-point range the last two games.
4. Dion Wright has scored in double figures seven of the last eight games. Over that span, he went 53-87 (61%) from the field and averaged 13.3 points and 6.0 rebounds. In the win over VCU, Wright played one of the best all-around games of his career with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Wright ranks 12th in the A-10 in scoring and 11th in rebounding, and he has a .573 field goal percentage in conference games.
St. Bonaventure vs. Richmond: The First Meeting This Year: Jan. 11, 2015 at Robins Center -- Richmond 60, St. Bonaventure 41
Despite playing all but one minute of the first half without Youssou Ndoye, who had picked up two early fouls, St. Bonaventure trailed by only two points at halftime (25-23). It was a 36-31 game when Richmond scored eight unanswered points to open its largest lead of the game to that point at 44-31 with 8:52 remaining. From that point, the Bonnies could not come any closer than 11 points. In the second half, St. Bonaventure went cold and made only seven of its 28 shots (25 percent). Richmond wound up shooting 14-25 (56 percent) over the final 20 minutes. The Bonnies' 41 points were a season low.
Series Notes
This will be the 21st meeting in a series that Richmond leads 15-5; the Spiders have won three of the last five meetings. Last season, each team won on its home court. The first meeting in the series was in 2002.
Richmond Notes
• Richmond enters this game after losing three of its last four games, most recently a 71-67 overtime decision at George Mason on Saturday afternoon. The Spiders recently lost center Alonzo Nelson-Odouda for an indefinite time due to a facial injury; he was the team's top shot-blocker and second leading rebounder and also was averaging 9.6 points per game. Richmond is 1-9 on the road this season.
• Even though the stands just 5-8, Kendall Anthony is Richmond's engine. He leads the Spiders in scoring at 16.8 points per game, shooting 44 percent from the field (38 percent from three-point range) and 81 percent at the free throw line.
• The Spiders have two other capable guards who compliment Anthony, junior Trey Davis and sophomore ShawnDre Jones. Power forward Terry Allen is the second-leading scorer at 12.3 points per game and leads the Spiders in rebounding at 5.7 per game.
St. Bonaventure's Last Game: Dayton 75, Bonnies 61
Youssou Ndoye had 16 points and 12 rebounds but St. Bonaventure lost 75-61 at Dayton on Feb. 14. The Bonnies trailed 35-27 at halftime but could not close the gap early in the second. The Flyers, who went 9-20 from three-point range for the game, opened a 16-point lead eight minutes into the second half. St. Bonaventure was not able to come closer than 12 points the remainder of the game.
In their first game without starting point guard Jaylen Adams, the Bonnies had 17 turnovers – 11 in the first half. Junior Iakeem Alston made his first career start in place of Adams and acquitted himself well with a career high 11 points and three assists in 30 minutes. Marcus Posley was the only other Bonnies player to reach double figures with 12 points. St. Bonaventure did not make a three-point field goal in the game, ending 0-11.
Posley's Recent Success No Fluke
Replacing 1,000-point scorer Matthew Wright '14 was certainly not what anyone expected of Marcus Posley. The junior guard, who spent a year at Ball State and then transferred to Indian Hills (Iowa) junior college for the 2013-14 season, entered the year somewhat under the radar. But Posley has flourished at St. Bonaventure, where he has become one of the top scorers in the Atlantic 10.
Notes on his season:
• Posley is fifth in the A-10 in scoring at 16.7 points per game.
• He has nine 20-point games this season, the second-most of any A-10 player behind Saint Joseph's sophomore forward DeAndre Bembry.
• Posley is second in the A-10 in three-point field goals per game (2.7).
• He has scored in double figures in 19 of 23 games.
• He is a solid free throw shooter at .756, which also ranks 13th in the A-10.
• Posley has slumped shooting of late, going 1-17 from three-point range the past two games.
Ndoye Picks It Up In A-10
In A-10 games, senior center Youssou Ndoye has a field goal percentage of .500 and is averaging 13.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Prior to the start of A-10 play, Ndoye was shooting .444 from the field. Over the past nine games, Ndoye was 45-85 (.529) from the field and averaged 15.0 points per game. Ndoye needs 117 points to reach 1,000 for his career.
Dion Wright Backing Up Sports Illustrated's Breakout Projection
Following a sophomore season that could easily been described as a breakout, St. Bonaventure junior Dion Wright was named to Sport Illustrated's list of the "Projected Breakout Players" for this year. The SI system "forecasts advanced statistics -- such as offensive efficiency, usage rates, and rebound and assist rates." The 6-7 forward from Carson, Calif., averaged 8.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game coming off the bench in all 33 games as a sophomore. Wright more than doubled his per-game scoring and rebounding averages from his freshman season. So far this season, Wright has lived up to the hype. Notes on Wright's season:
• He has scored in double figures 18 times including seven of the last eight games.
• Had back-to-back 20-point games against two of the A-10's best defensive teams – 22 at Rhode Island (tying his career high) and 21 against LaSalle.
• Wright ranks 12th in the A-10 in scoring at 13.1 points per game.
• Wright, who has rarely left the floor this year, is also averaging 6.8 rebounds a game, which ranks 11th among A-10 players.
• He has four-double-doubles this season.
• Well-known for his tenacity under the backboard, Wright has snagged 74 offensive rebounds (3.2 pg), which is sixth-best among all A-10 players.
Alston's Opportunity
While freshman point guard Jay Adams is sidelined, junior guard Iakeem Alston will have the opportunity to play significantly more minutes. The 6-2 junior college transfer started at Dayton and scored a career high 11 points in 30 minutes of action. Prior to Dayton, he had played an average of seven minutes per game.
