@BonniesBaseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Coppin State On Thursday

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. –
The St. Bonaventure baseball team extended its winning streak to five on Thursday March 12, as the squad downed the Coppin State Eagles, by a score of 8-1 in both games.

In the first game, the Bonnies continue to jump out early on opponents, as they registered scored three runs in the first three innings for the fourth time out of nine games this season. Sophomore Danny Urban brought in the first run for St. Bonaventure in the top of the second on a sac-fly to right field that allowed Tyler Bell to tag up at third and score. The Bonnies added two more in the top of the third off an unconventional play. Aaron Phillips singled, but as Phillips was running to first, Cole Peterson, who was on second, rounded third to score. The ball went into home to try to get Peterson out, but was too late. At the same time the ball was going home, Phillips attempted to take second. The Coppin State catcher went to throw it to second base, but over threw the second baseman and the ball went into centerfield, which allowed Phillips to go to third and eventually score at home.

The Eagles of Coppin State were able to get a run back in the bottom half of the third off a George Dragon double that scored Colin Dower.

St. Bonaventure's offense had another outburst in the fifth, as it scored four runs on five hits. Tyler Bell, Dylan Dunn and Cole Peterson earned the four RBIs. The Brown and White went on to collect one more run in the top of the seven off an error on the Coppin State third baseman.

In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Reston Pettit came into the game in relief of Drew Teller. Pettit went on to strikeout the side.

The starting pitcher, Drew Teller, continues to be stellar on the mound, as he went six innings today giving up one run that was not earned due to an error. The 6-4 junior finished his day of work with five strikeouts and five hits allowed. On the season, Teller now holds a 0.98 era after three appearances on the mound this season. In 18.1 innings, the Mayfield Heights, Ohio native, has recorded 10 strikeouts and only allowed four runs.

In the second game of the day for the Bonnies, the two teams went on to trade runs in the first inning, but this would end up being the only run for the Eagles.

St. Bonaventure broke the one-run tie in the top of the third off a Thad Johnson groundout to second base that scored Cole Peterson from third. The game remained at 2-1 in favor of the Bonnies until the fifth inning when Danny Urban singled to score Johnson. St. Bonaventure went on to add five runs over the next two innings to close out the Eagles.

Picking up RBIs for the Brown and White in game two were Cole Peterson, Aaron Phillips, Ted Dilts, Thad Johnson and Danny Urban.

Freshman pitcher Nate Grant picked up his second win of the season.

Junior Thad Johnson went 3-8 on the day with a run and three RBIs. The 5-9 third-basemen lead the Bonnies this season in batting average with a .450. Johnson also has a team-high in four different batting categories: at-bats (40), hits (18), RBIs (8) and total bases (20).

The 7-2 start that St. Bonaventure is currently on is its best start in the past 10 years.

Up next for the Brown and White is Mount St. Mary's on Sunday March 15. The two programs will play two on Sunday. The series was a originally scheduled for three-games, but due to weather in the Maryland area, the series was shortened to a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
