BEL AIR, MD. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team improved its record to 9-2, as the squad swept a doubleheader against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, by a score of 5-2 in game one and 6-3 in game two. In their second stint in Florida, the Bonnies went 7-1, which includes a seven-game winning streak that they are currently on.
In the first game on Sunday, Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an early two-run lead after the first inning. St. Bonaventure was able to get a run back in the next half inning off a Jonathan Diaz sac-fly that scored Dylan Dunn from third. The Bonnies were able to tie the game up at two apiece in the top of the fourth when Dunn singled to right field that allowed Tyler Bell to touch home. In the fifth the Brown and White executed a squeeze play, as they used Jared Baldinelli's speed to their advantage by having Aaron Phillips lay down a bunt, which allowed Baldinelli to beat the throw at the plate from third. With a one-run lead in tack for the Bonnies, Phillips added two insurance runs in the seventh on a single to right field that scored Cole Peterson and Diaz. St. Bonaventure went on to shut down the Mountaineers' offense, as they only allowed one hit in the final three innings to earn the victory in game one.
A four run inning by the Bonnies would help them prevail over the Mountaineers in the second game of the day. After being down 3-1 entering the top of the fourth, St. Bonaventure's chances looked bleak in the seven-inning game. Although to begin the inning, the first three batters reached base to give the Brown and White the bases loaded with no outs. Tyler Walter pulled St. Bonaventure within one after a single to right field that moved the runners up a base. In the next at-bat, Thad Johnson reached base on a fielder's choice that resulted in Walter being out at second, but scored Tyler Kirwan from third. The catcher, Dylan Dunn, gave the Bonnies their lead back when he hit a sac-fly to right field that scored Cole Peterson. Bradley Gresock put some distance between the Bonnies and Mountaineers, as he scored Johnson with two outs. After the top of the fourth inning, St. Boanventure led 5-3.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Thad Johnson singled down the left field line that scored Peterson from second. The Bonnies went on to close out the game just like they did in the first game by only allowing one hit by the Mountaineers over their final three innings to clinch the sweep.
Starting on the mound for the Bonnies today were Steven Klimek and Connor Grey. Klimek got the nod in the first game and finished the day going eight innings with five strikeouts and allowing two runs on five hits. Grey got the start in the second game of the day. Grey went five innings and struck out four batters, while giving up three runs on seven hits.
Picking up saves were Thad Johnson and Aaron Phillips. Johnson notched his fourth save of the season, while Phillips collected his second. Johnson, who tied his save total from last season on Sunday, now has eight career saves, which puts him one shy of second all-time career saves in the St. Bonaventure record book.
Up Next, the Bonnies will put their seven-game winning streak on the line when they welcome Little Three rival Niagara to Fred Handler Park on Tuesday, March 24 for St. Bonaventure's home opener.
