St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team extended its winning streak to eight on Tuesday, March 24, as the Bonnies came back from being down four runs to win in extra innings in game one, by a score of 8-7 over the Niagara Purple Eagles. Game Two ended in a tie after eight innings, due to an umpire's decision because of darkness.
The day didn't start off well for the Brown and White, as they would allow two runs on four hits in the first inning of the game. Niagara went on to tack on one more run in the third before the Bonnies were able to get a run of its own.
After being down three runs, John Novenche singled to right-center that scored Ted Dilts from second. Although, the two run deficit went on to grow to five in the top of the fifth, when the Purple Eagles added three runs on three hits and one error.
St. Bonaventure was able to put their deficit back down to two after two innings of work. Dylan Dunn knocked his first homerun of the season in the bottom of the fifth with no men on. In the next inning for the Bonnies, Cole Peterson tripled to right center that scored Tyler Kirwan. Following suit was Thad Johnson, who doubled down the left field line and drove in Peterson. The Purple Eagles got one run in the top of the seventh off a Firenzi homerun.
Being down three in the final half inning, the chances were slim for the Bonnies, but they continued to fight. With one out already on the board, Tyler Walter doubled to right center. In the next at-bat, Jonathan Diaz singled to right-center that scored Walter. Following Diaz was Tyler Kirwan, who worked a walk. After pass ball that advanced the runners to second and third, Cole Peterson grounded out to third, but scored Diaz from third. The third-baseman, Johnson, came to the plate with two outs and ripped the ball to second base for a single, which scored Kirwan from second for the tying run.
After a quiet eighth and ninth innings, Niagara went three up and three down. To begin the 10th inning for the Bonnies, Alex Schutz worked a walk. Follow Schutz was Walter, who singled to right center that put Schutz at third. After an intentionally walk of Diaz to put the bases loaded with one out, Kirwan came to the plate. Kirwan flied out to RF, but wasn't deep enough to get the walk-off sac-fly. Although the game-winning sac-fly would come in the next at-bat, as Cole Peterson hit a deep fly ball to center field, which allowed Schutz to score and get the game-winner.
Picking up the win in game one was Thad Johnson, while Saundry of Niagara earned his first loss of the season. Johnson went two innings and not allowing a hit.
The second game of the day ended up being the opposite of the first as it was a very quiet defense and pitchers battle. Niagara notched the first run off the game off a squeeze bunt attempt that was successful that scored McCauley from third. St. Bonaventure went on to get its lone run in the bottom of the fourth, as Novenche singled up the middle to score Dylan Dunn from second.
Both teams would go the next four innings with chances to break the tie, but neither team would be able to, as the game ended in a rarely seen baseball tie.
Up next, St. Bonaventure opens its Atlantic 10 schedule this weekend at George Washington. First game is on Friday, March 27 at 3 p.m.
