The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team opened up Atlantic 10 conference play on Friday, March 27 with a 6-5 loss to the George Washington Colonials.
The story for the Bonnies was the bat of senior outfielder Tyler Bell, who went 3-4 on the day, which includes two homeruns. Bell's first homer came in the second inning to give the Bonnies a two-run lead, while his second dinger came in the top of the eighth inning to bring the Brown and White within one-run.
Drew Teller earned his first loss of the season on Friday after giving up five runs on nine hits in three innings of work. Bobby LeWarne picked up the win for George Washington, while Eddie Muhl collected his sixth save in 2015.
How It Happened:
- St. Bonaventure jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when designated-hitter Ted Dilts doubled to center field that scored Cole Peterson.
- The Bonnies doubled up their lead in the next inning with a Tyler Bell homerun.
- George Washington got a run back in the bottom of the second, as Kevin Mahala reached first on an error by Jonathan Diaz, which allowed Ryan Xepoleas to score.
- In the bottom of the third, the Colonials went on to score four runs on six hits. With men on second and third, Brandon Chapman singled to left field that scored the runners in scoring position. Mahala picked up his third RBI of the day off a double to left field that scored Xepoleas and Chapman.
- The Bonnies offense went quiet through the fourth, fifth and sixth inning, as it only registered one hit through three innings.
- GW added one more run in the fifth when Joey Bartosic singled through the left side that scored Chapman.
- Thad Johnson continued his hot hitting in the top of the seventh with a double to left center to score Baldinelli. After seven, GW led 6-3.
- Tyler Bell put the Bonnies within one after one swing of the bat, as he knocked his second homer of the game in the eighth inning that scored himself and Dylan Dunn.
- George Washington would go down in order in next half inning to keep the score at 6-5 in favor of the home team.
- To begin the ninth inning, John Novenche worked himself a walk after pinch hitting for Baldinelli. Tommy Styn would come into the game for Novenche as a pinch runner.
- In the next at-bat, Cole Peterson laid down a sac bunt to move Styn over to second with just one out on the board.
- With the heart of the line-up coming up for the Bonnies, Thad Johnson grounded out to the second baseman, but moved Styn over to third with two outs. Following Johnson was Dilts, who flied out to end the game.
