The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team suffered aa 12-5 loss to Buffalo on Wednesday at Handler Park.
The Bonnies and Bulls went back-and-forth in the early stage of the game, but a two-run inning in the sixth and a grand slam in the eighth put the game out of reach for the Brown and White.
Junior pitcher Drew Teller picked up the loss in the setback, as he threw five innings and giving up six runs on eight hits. Teller recorded four strikeouts on the day.
Relief pitcher Brandon Bentley registered the win for the Bulls.
How It Happened:
- Buffalo ended the scoreless tie in the top of the third off a Ben Haefner triple to right center that scored Charlie Sobieraski.
- The Bonnies answered back in the next half inning with two singles that resulted in two runs. Dylan Dunn singled to right field that scored Cole Peterson from third. In the next at-bat, Tyler Bell doubled to right center to put runners on second and third for Tyler Walter with two outs. Walter went on to single to the shortstop and scored Dunn to give the Brown and White a one-run lead.
- The Bulls went on to score three runs in the fourth off four hits. Mike Abrunzo tripled to score Ben Vey from first. Sobieraski doubled down the left field line in the next at-bat to score Abrunzo. Following Sobieraski was Justin Gonzalez, who singled to shortstop to score Sobieraski.
- With the score sitting at 4-2, in favor of the bulls, St. Bonaventure tied the ballgame up at four with a Thad Johnson single to right field that scored Randy Delanoy and John Novenche.
- Buffalo broke the tie in the top of the fifth with a Chris Kwitzer triple to left center that scored Vinny Mallaro and Bobby Sheppard.
- The Bonnies were able to get one run back in the bottom half of the fifth off a wild pitch to score Bell from third.
- The Bulls pushed their lead to three in the top of the sixth with two runs off one hit.
- Buffalo put the game out of reach in the eighth with a Vinny Mallaro grand slam to left field. After the top of the eighth, Buffalo led 12-5.
- The Bulls held on for the seven-run victory by only allowing one hit over the last two innings.
Beyond The Box Score:
- Junior Thad Johnson extended his hitting-streak to seven with his single in the fourth inning.
- Both, Tyler Bell's hits were doubles, which puts him with a team-high six doubles.
- Tyler Walter had his fifth multi-hit game of the year, while Bell had his sixth.
