Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team came up short on Tuesday, April 14 against Big 4 Rival Buffalo Bulls, by a score of 9-8.

It was an evenly played game on Tuesday, as the two teams remained tied for most of the contest until Buffalo's bats exploded in the top of the seventh for five runs on five hits. St. Bonaventure was able to add four more runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to keep the Bulls on their heels, but was never able to get the tying run.

Both Cole Peterson and Tyler Kirwan had strong outings on Tuesday in the batter's box. Peterson went 3-5 with three singles and one RBI, while Kirwan went a perfect 2-2 with one RBI and two runs. Kirwan had a deep double that bounced off the outfield wall in the eighth.

It was pitching by committee for the Bonnies on Tuesday, as six players saw time on the rubber. Getting the start was freshman Aaron Phillips, but only lasted two outs into the game. Relieving him was fellow classmate Ben Contento, who threw 3.1 innings and allowed one hit and struck out five batters. After Contento were Reston Pettit, Steven Klimek, Reid Van Woert and Thad Johnson, respectively. Pettit, Van Woert and Johnson didn't allow a run, while Klimek surrendered five, but only three were earned.

Ben Hartz of Buffalo earned his second win on the year.

How It Happened:

  • The Bulls jumped out on the Bonnies in the top of the first inning when Chris Kwitzer doubled to right field that drove in two runners. In the next at-bat, Ben Vey brought in Kwitzer from second on a single.
  • St. Bonaventure answered back the three runs in the bottom of the second on small ball. Danny Urban grounded out to the second baseman, while Tyler Walter advanced to second and Tyler Bell scored. Later in the inning, Randy Delanoy singled to left center to score Walter. Following suit of Delanoy was Cole Peterson, who singled up the middle that scored Delanoy.
  • The Brown and White took the lead in the third inning on a Urban sac-fly that scored Dylan Dunn.
  • The lead for the Bonnies wouldn't last long as Buffalo led off the fourth inning with a homer to left field.
  • The game went quiet through the fifth and sixth inning and then the Bulls' bats came alive. UB went on to score five runs on five hits through the inning. After the top of the seventh, Buffalo led the Bonnies 9-4.
  • St. Bonaventure didn't go away quietly, as the Bonnies would score two runs in the next half inning. Both runs came way of sac-flies from Ted Dilts and Dylan Dunn.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Tyler Kirwan hit a deep double to left center with one out to score Alex Schutz from first. Kirwan would eventually come around to score off an error on the Buffalo shortstop.
  • St. Bonaventure was unable to get anything going in the bottom of the ninth, as the heart of the line-up went three up and three down.

Beyond The Box Score:

  • Senior Tyler Bell improved his hitting streak to a team-high four games on Tuesday.
  • Freshman shortstop Cole Peterson's three hits against Buffalo was his fourth game this season in which he has recorded three hits in a single game.
  • Danny Urban recorded his first multiple RBI game of the season.
  • Pitcher Reid Van Woert saw his first action on the mound since April 1. Van Woert went one inning and notched one strikeout.
