The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team defeated the La Salle Explorers in game one of a three-game series, off the heels of another dominating performance on the mound by junior right-handed pitcher Connor Grey.
The starting pitcher, Grey, won his first conference game of the 2015 season on Friday by throwing seven innings and only allowed one run on four hits, while striking out two. Despite today's game being Grey's first win in conference play this season, Grey has tossed 27.2 innings, while only surrendering four earned runs and has a 1.30 ERA.
St. Bonaventure only had six hits on Friday, which came from six different members of the Brown and White. Thad Johnson, Ted Dilts, Tyler Bell, Tyler Walter, Danny Urban and Randy Delanoy all had hits on the day.
Junior Thad Johnson also saw time on the mound, as he was asked upon to close the game out for the Bonnies. Johnson picked up his sixth save of the season, which places him in third all-time in a single season.
How It Happened:
- The Bonnies broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third when freshman Cole Peterson laid down a beautiful squeeze sac-bunt to score Danny Urban from third.
- In the next inning for St. Bonaventure, Ted Dilts led off with a deep double to right center. Dilts came around to score during the next at-bat as Dylan Dunn reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher after a sac-bunt.
- La Salle was able to get itself on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Arnold singled to center field to score Savakinus.
- The Bonnies went on to shut down the Explorers' offense in the final three innings, as they would only record two hits.
Beyond The Box Score:
- Thad Johnson now has 10 career saves that places him second all-time in a career, trailing Brian Pellegrini, who had 16 saves.
- Senior Tyler Bell improved his season-high hitting streak to five on Friday. Bell went 1-3 on the day with a single in the seventh.
