Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team faced (10-8-1, 0-5) another setback on Thursday, April 2, when the Bonnies were downed by Atlantic 10 foe Richmond Spiders (16-8, 7-1) at Fred Handler Park, by scores of 4-3 in game one and 3-1 in game two.

In the first game, after a scoreless first three innings, Richmond was able to push the first run across the plate in the top of the fourth, as the Spiders second baseman notched a RBI groundout. Richmond tacked on three more runs in the next inning off three hits, including one extra-base hit.

St. Bonaventure was able to answer back with a couple runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Thad Johnson singled up the middle for a two-run RBI that scored John Novenche and Danny Urban.

The Bonnies continued to fight back in the sixth, as senior Tyler Bell registered a RBI groundout to the second-baseman that scored Dylan Dunn from third.

Both team's offensive went cold to finish out the game. St. Bonaventure went 1-9 over the last three innings, while Richmond went 0-8, including a walk.

Picking up the loss for the Bonnies was freshman Brandon Schlimm, who went 4.2 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits. In relief of Schlimm was fellow classmate Aaron Phillips. Phillips pitched a gem out of the bullpen, as he went 4.1 innings with four strikeouts and didn't allow a single hit.

Ryan Cook of Richmond recorded his fourth win after seven innings of work.

As for game two of the day, Richmond jumped out to an early one run lead in the second off a groundout RBI. The Spiders added one more in the sixth on an error on Thad Johnson.

St. Bonaventure was able to get one run across the board in the seventh to make things interesting, as Tyler Bell singled to center field to score Cole Peterson from second.

Richmond increased its lead back to two runs in the top of the ninth off a Michael Morman double to left center to score Daniel Brumbaugh. In the next half inning, St. Bonaventure started with a lead-off single, but was unable to move the runner, as the next three batters went down in order.

Starting on the mound in game two of the doubleheader for the Brown and White was junior Connor Grey. Grey gave up four hits and two runs, but neither of the two runs were earned in his six innings. But, in his last two appearances, which were both losses for the junior righty from Frewsburg, N.Y, Grey has allowed one earned run, three runs and 10 hits in 14 innings of work. In those two games, St. Bonaventure's offense was held scoreless, while Grey was on the mound.

Offensively, Tyler Bell and Thad Johnson led the way with two RBIs, apiece. Dylan Dunn knocked three hits in five plate appearances and had one run.

Despite the two losses for the Bonnies, they held one of the more powerful hitting teams in the Atlantic 10 to just seven runs in two games on Thursday. The Spiders entered the day averaging 8.7 runs per game and 192 runs total, which places them first and 24th in the nation, respectively. Richmond also ranks third in the nation in home runs per game at 1.32, but were held without any Thursday.

St. Bonaventure looks to avoid a sweep when it hosts the Spiders for game three on Friday, April 3, at 12:00 p.m.
