The Short Story:
The Davidson Wildcats completed the series sweep of the St. Bonaventure baseball team in a blowout on Sunday, April 26, by a score of 16-1.
The Story of the day was the strong starting pitching by Davidson's Ryan Lowe, who held the Bonnies in check as he only allowed one run on five hits in 8.2 innings of work. Lowe's lone run that he allowed was not earned due to a pass ball on the catcher. Lowe also went two for five at the plate with one RBI and one run.
Picking up hits for the Brown and White were Ted Dilts, Tyler Kirwan, Tyler Walter and Jonathan Diaz. Kirwan was the lone member of the Bonnies to record a multi-hit game.
Junior pitcher Steven Klimek earned his sixth loss of the season by allowing six runs on four hits over five innings. Klimek registered four strikeouts in the setback.
How It Happened:
- Davidson got on the board first in the top of the second when Sam Foy hit an infield single to score Ben Arkin from third.
- In the next inning, the Wildcats increased their lead to five runs with one swing of the bat from Nathan Becker, as he hit a grand slam to deep center field.
- The bleeding continued for the Bonnies in the top fourth when Foy came around to score on a wild pitch.
- The Brown and White would finally get a run on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Bell led the inning off with a strike out, but the catcher was unable to handle the pitch, which allowed Bell to reach first. During the next at-bat, Bell went on to steal second base and then moved over to third on a ground out. With one out on the board, Bell came home to score on a groundout by Tyler Walter.
- The Wildcats added five more runs through the seventh and eighth inning, including a two-run homer and a triple that drove in one run.
- In the top of the ninth, Davidson tallied five additional runs to make the game well out of reach.
- St. Bonaventure loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but was unable to score any runners.
