VESTAL, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure baseball team was swept by the Binghamton Bearcats on Tuesday, April 28 in similar fashion, as both games ended with a 4-3 result in extra innings at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal, N.Y.
In the first game of the doubleheader, St. Bonaventure jumped out to an early one-run lead in the top of the first with a single from Tyler Bell that scored Thad Johnson. The Bearcats had an answer for the Bonnies in the next half inning with a double down the right field line that scored their designated hitter.
The Bonnies broke the one-run tie in the top of the second, when Aaron Phillips scored from third on a Tyler Walter groundout.
The game went quiet until the bottom of the fourth, as Binghamton's Reed Gamache hit a solo homerun to right field.
With the game tie at two apiece and headed into the final inning of regulation, St. Bonaventure snapped the tie with a sacrifice fly from Bell that drove in Tommy Styn.
The win was in the grasp of the Bonnies, as they brought in their closer Thad Johnson, who already has seven saves on the year. Johnson led off the inning with back-to-back doubles for Binghamton, which led to the tying run scoring and his first blown save of the season and just his fourth run allowed all season.
Binghamton went on to claim game one in the bottom of the ninth with a David Schanz single to left field that scored Chris McGee.
In game two of the twin bill, St. Bonaventure powered itself to an early two-run lead in the top of the first with a two-run homerun from Dylan Dunn. The Brown and White picked up another run in the top of the fifth, as Thad Johnson doubled to left center to score Matt Eastman.
The Bonnies held a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the Bearcats started to claw their back into the game with a groundout to the second with the bases loaded that scored the runner at third. In the sixth inning, Binghamton's CJ Krowiak tripled to right center that resulted in Eddie Poseavec to cross home plate.
It was déjà vu all over again for the Bonnies in the bottom of the seventh. The score was 3-2 in SBU favor, but this time head coach Larry Sudbrook decided to stick with his starter, Aaron Phillips. Phillips led the inning off with a lead-off walk. The runner eventually made it around the bases to third off of a groundout and a fly-out. With a runner on third and two outs on the board, Phillips threw the ball wide of the catcher and allowed Darian Herncane to score on the wild pitch and ultimately tie the game at three all.
The Bearcats clinched the doubleheader sweep of the Bonnies in the bottom of the eighth with a Nick Pancerella single down the left field line that scored Paul Rufo.
Earning the losses for the Bonnies today was Ben Contento and Reid Van Woert. Contento registered his second loss of the season, while Van Woert tallied his first.
On deck for the Bonnies is a three-game series in the Bronx against the Fordham Rams. The series will begin Friday, May 1 with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m. The two teams will then meet up again on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and then Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
