The Short Story:
The St. Bonaventure baseball team bounced back on Saturday, May 9 against the Saint Joseph's as it defeated the Hawks, 4-1.
After allowing a first inning run, Brandon Schlimm calmed down and controlled the tempo of the game until he was taken out in the top of the seventh. The freshman pitcher went six innings and allowed seven hits and three strikeouts. Schlimm went on to pick up his first conference win in his collegiate career.
Senior Dylan Dunn continued his strong series with a two-run homerun in the second inning that ultimately gave the Bonnies their winning run. In the series so far, the Hornell, N.Y. native has gone 4-7 with two doubles and one homerun.
Picking up his eighth save of the season was Thad Johnson. Johnson now sits behind Brian Pellegrini for second all-time in saves in a single season. Pellegrini holds the all-time single season record with nine. Johnson is also second all-time in a career with 11, while he trails Pellegrini by five.
The Saint Joseph's starting pitcher, Tyler Pallante, earned his fourth loss of the season after going three innings and allowing two runs.
How It Happened:
- Saint Joseph's began the game like they did yesterday with a run in the first inning. The designated hitter Deon Stafford grounded out to Randy Delanoy at second, but the runner from third was allowed to score.
- The Hawks lead didn't last long, as senior catcher Dylan Dunn crushed a pitch that cleared the left field wall easily for a two-run homerun.
- The Bonnies added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Aaron Phillips notched the first run with a single to left center to score Delanoy. Later in the inning, Tyler Walter singled to left field, which allowed Phillips to touch home.
- Coach Sudbrook called upon Thad Johnson in the seventh inning, who tossed the final three innings and only surrendered one hit.
Up Next:
The Bonnies and Hawks will return to the diamond on Sunday, May 10 at noon for the rubber match of the series.
