The Short Story:

St. Bonaventure scored a goal in each half en route to its first win of the season, a 2-0 shutout over the University at Buffalo on Monday evening at the Marra Athletic Complex.

The Bonnies broke the silence at the 23:29 mark as Abby Maiello headed a long Stephanie Jenkins cross from deep in the right corner into the back of the net to give St. Bonavenutre the 1-0 lead.

Maiello nearly missed her second goal of the game with a shot toward the inside left post as the first-half clock expired, but UB's keeper Laura Dougall punched it wide and the two teams went into the half with the score remaining 1-0.

Early in the second half, the Bonnies went on the counter and Maiello drove down the field and passed it to a cutting Lauren Hill who got it passed the charging UB keeper and knocked it in off the left post to give the Bonnies a 2-0 lead.

The Bulls pressed forward in the final 10 minutes of the game, but the Bona defense held tough. A tipped shot corralled on a dive near the goal line by keeper Beth Moore highlighted the defensive effort, and the Bonnies completed the 2-0 shutout win.

Coach's Corner:

"I think both of those players [Abby Maiello and Lauren Hill] take a lot of personal responsibility for this team and what we do," said Bonnies' head coach Steve Brdarski. "The two of them got goals in the last two games, and they really came through tonight.

"That second goal, we had two quick, great passes, and we probably covered 80 yards in seven seconds.

"It's one thing for [Maiello and Hill] to score those goals, but it's another thing for them to be the leaders that they are.

"We were professional in the way we played those last 15-20 minutes. We gave them space, and then we took away that space and didn't make critical errors.
