The Short Story
St. Bonaventure's perfect start to the Atlantic 10 season ended on Saturday night with a 95-88 loss at Duquesne.
The Bonnies saw the Dukes make 66 percent (18-27) of their shots from the field in the second half. Duquesne broke the game open with a 13-3 run, giving the Dukes a 77-66 led with 4:14 left. St. Bonaventure clawed back to within five at 93-88, but that came with only 21 seconds left.
Rebounding played a key part in the decision as the Dukes enjoyed a 49-34 advantage on the glass. Duquesne, which is now 9-1 at home, outscored St. Bonaventure 46-36 in the paint.
Jaylen Adams led the Bonnies with 22 points. He was joined in double figures by Denzel Gregg (19), Dion Wright (17) and Marcus Posley (15). Wright, who also grabbed 10 rebounds, reached the 1,000 career point mark with a basket at the 16:55 mark of the second half; he now has 1,002.
St. Bonaventure was looking for the first 5-0 start to an A-10 season in its history.
How It Happened:
- The Bonnies fell into an early 8-0 hole; Nelson Kaputo came off the bench and made his first two three-point shots to pull St. Bonaventure within 12-8 at the first media timeout.
- Battling back, St. Bonaventure used an 8-0 run to take the lead at 16-15.
- The Dukes answered with a three-pointer by Micah Mason, his second early, and Bona trailed 18-16 at 11:38 mark.
- The teams traded scores over the next four minutes; Dion Wright got hot and scored seven points in a five minute span.
- Marcus Posley's three-pointer gave the Bonnies a 32-30 lead at the 3:24 mark.
- St. Bonaventure fell behind 36-32, but Jordan Tyson scored on a jump hook, then the Bonnies got a defensive stop.
- Nelson Kaputo made a three-pointer from the corner with one second left in the first to send St. Bonaventure to the locker room with a 37-36 lead.
- Early in the second half, Gregg and Mason traded threes and the game was knotted at 48.
- Answering an 8-0 run from Duquesne, a jumper each from Adams and Gregg – along with a nice move down low from Tyson – again brought the Bonnies within one at 55-54 at the 13:27 mark.
- Back-to-back three-pointers by Posley and Adams put the Brown and White up 61-57 with 10:28 on the clock..
- Duquesne called a timeout and then scored seven unanswered points to regain a 64-61 lead.
- It was a 64-63 Dukes lead when the momentum swung for good as Duquesne went on a 13-3 run to take its largest lead at that point at 77-66 with 4:14 to play. A tip-in by L.G. Gill and a three-pointer from Derrick Colter capped the run.
- Down 82-71 with 1:45 left in the second half, Gregg hit two free throws to cut the lead to single digits.
- Five points were as close as the Bonnies could close the gap the rest of the way as Duquesne made 10 free throws in the final 1:24.
- St. Bonaventure, the second-best free throw shooting team in the nation, went an uncharacteristic 16-24 at the line.
- The Dukes' 95 points were the most allowed by St. Bonaventure this season.
Beyond the Box Score:
- Dion Wright is now the 41st player in the program's storied history to reach the century mark. Wright is now also only the 24th member of the exclusive 1,000-point, 500-rebound club – the first St. Bonaventure player to do so since Demitrius Conger '13.
- With four three-pointers, Marcus Posley jumped to 13th place on the program's all-time three-point field goals made list – surpassing David Messiah Capers (1995-00), Rob Lanier (1986-90), and Mike Gansey (2001-03). Posley, for his career, now has 110 made three-pointers.
- Gregg has now scored in double figures in all five A-10 games; he had five double figure games in 11 non-conference games.
- Jordan Tyson set a career high with his six points.
- The Bonnies tied their season high in three-point field goals with 12.
