The Short Story
Marcus Posley scored 30 points but St. Bonaventure came up on the short end of an 84-76 final at VCU on Sunday afternoon.

The Bonnies led by nine early in the second half as Posley scored the first 13 points of the half for St. Bonaventure. VCU slowly climbed back and eventually took a 63-61 lead with 5:34 left. Posley tied the game at 63, but the Rams surged ahead for good with an 8-2 run after that. VCU increased its winning streak to 10 games, while the Bonnies lost their third straight and fell to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in the Atlantic 10.

Dion Wright posted his A-10 leading eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. He also blocked three shots. Jaylen Adams, who suffered a hip bruise late in the first half, scored 11 points. Denzel Gregg had six points and 11 rebounds, and Derrick Woods had six points.

How It Happened:

  • The Bonnies didn't record their first field goal until six minutes had been played. Idris Taqqee got the visitors on the board with a three-pointer.
  • St. Bonaventure missed its first seven shots but then made three of its next five to tie the game at 8-8.
  • Derrick Woods helped to spark the Bona offense with six points early before he picked up his second foul at the 6:53 mark.
  • VCU's Jequan Lewis made back-to-back three-pointers to put the Rams up 23-16.
  • St. Bonaventure battled back, however. It was a 27-22 lead when the Bonnies went on a 7-2 run, tying the score on a free throw by Dion Wright with 2:00 left in the half.
  • Denzel Gregg tipped in a missed shot with two seconds left in the first to give St. Bonaventure a 34-33 lead at halftime.
  • Posley got hot at the start of the second half, scoring the Bonnies' first 13 points of the stanza over the first 4:12. He made three three-pointers and two layups, increasing the Bonnies' lead to 47-39 by the 15:18 mark.
  • The Bonnies pushed their lead as large as nine points at 50-41 after Posley's three-point play at the 13:29 mark.
  • VCU narrowed the gap with a 10-3 run capped by a three-pointer that trimmed Bona's lead to 55-54 with 9:38 remaining.
  • It was a 60-57 St. Bonaventure lead when VCU surged ahead with a 12-3 run to open a 69-63 lead. Doug Brooks' layup capped the run with 3:39 left.
  • After that, the Bonnies never came closer than six.
  • Both of Bona's freshman centers, Derrick Woods and Jordan Tyson, fouled out during the second half, leaving the Bonnies to play their small lineup.

Beyond the Box Score:

  • Posley scored 61 points over two games this week. He had 31 against Dayton, and now has four 30-point games this season.
  • Dion Wright tied his career high with 13 rebounds. Today's game was Wright's Atlantic 10 leading eight double-double of the season.
  • With his three triples, Posley passed Zarryon Fereti (2006-08) for 12th place on the program's all-time three-pointers made list.

Up Next: St. Bonaventure is idle until next Sunday, Jan. 31, when it will host Richmond.
