The Short Story
Marcus Posley scored 30 points to lead St. Bonaventure to a 77-58 win at George Mason on Wednesday. The Bonnies improved to 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 and 10-3 overall.

The Bonnies led 37-34 at halftime but seized control with a 10-2 run early in the second half that ended with the visitors ahead 50-41. The Patriots (6-9, 0-2) never came any closer than five points the remainder of the night. 

Utilizing a zone defense, St. Bonaventure limited the Patriots to nine field goals on 30 shots in the second half, including 2-10 from three-point range. George Mason made just 38 percent of its shots in the game and went 14-28 at the free throw line.

Jaylen Adams scored 16 points and Denzel Gregg added 12 in support of Posley. Dion Wright, hampered by foul trouble, finished with eight points and 12 rebounds. Posley also had four assists and a steal and did not commit a turnover.

How It Happened:

  • The Bonnies led 7-2 early in the game. 
  • Marcus Posley got hot midway through the first half. He made back-to-back three-pointers to give the Bonnies a 35-30 lead with 4:41 left in the half.
  • Posley scored 18 of St. Bonaventure's 37 points in the first half.
  • The Patriots scored the last four points of the half and cut the Bonnies' lead to 37-34 at halftime.
  • St. Bonaventure used a 10-2 run to open a 50-41 lead by the 14:11 mark in the second half.
  • Otis Livingston made a three-pointer that pulled George Mason within five points at 55-50 with 10:25 remaining.
  • Jaylen Adams answered Livingston's shot with a three-pointer of his own.
  • Posley made a pair of free throws with 6:38 left that pushed the lead to 11 points at 63-52, and the Patriots were not able to threaten after that.
  • George Mason scored only eight points over the game's final 10:25.
  • While the Bonnies did not have a particularly effective game at 41 percent, they were 22-30 at the free throw line – 12-14 by Posley.
  • Despite Mason center Shevon Thompson grabbing 17 rebounds himself, the Bonnies owned a 42-41 edge on the boards. In addition to Wright's 12, Jordan Tyson set a career high with six, Idris Taqqee grabbed six and Posley had five. 

Beyond the Box Score:

  • St. Bonaventure is 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since the 1999-00 season. That team won its first four A-10 games.
  • The last time a Bonnies team started a season better than 10-3 was in 1999-00, when St. Bonaventure won 12 of its first 14 games.
  • Posley's 30 points are five short of his career high and marked his fifth 20-point game this season.
